Used car buying, registering in a different state

hello all,

I thought some here may have experience with this. I just bought a 4Runner in California (private sale) where I am living temporarily. I am now headed up to oregon to live permanently. I searched online but I am still unclear on how I am supposed to register this vehicle. It will be with me in oregon, but bought it in California. Is it even legal to drive it up there after buying it, or will I have to register it in California, and then oregon?

Thanks for any info, it's very confusing.

Usually in moving between states you can drive the vehicle during a short period of time (10 days or so). You need to have proof of sale (signed title, notarized bill of sale, etc...)

You might be pulled over for not having a plate, and you'll have to show proof of ownership, insurance, and have a good reason. I'd call the Oregon DMV and ask. Each state is different. Not sure how it is out where you are.

I have bought a couple vehicles out of state when I lived in Oregon. It's not hard to get them registered, but you only have 30 days to do so.

you can print the forms you need from this site and have everything ready when you go in. they will give you the plates before you leave and the new registration will com in the mail.

If you Live west of the cascades in the Portland area they have emissions testing that you will have to do before you can register the vehicle.

You can get a temporary permit to be extra safe, called a trip permit. I did that in Arizona between buying/registering. Oregon has the same option it looks like....
