New to 4Runners, what should I look for?

I'm a long time Toyota driver. Had a 2wd Tacoma and currently have a 2wd Tundra. I'm a long time off-roader, but have always driven dirt bikes, quads, dunebuggies and baja bugs. My friend's are all getting older 4x4s and being a Toyota guy, I am drawn to the 4Runner.

I am extremely mechanical and am willing and able to fix any issue. What I am looking at, are 2nd Gen 4Runners with a blown head gasket. They can be found in the sub-$1000 range around here.

My question is, what should I look for in an off-road 4Runner? Are certain years better than others? Are there any particular engine, trans, transfer case, or other options I should be on the look out for? How is the auto compared to a manual?

My plan is to leave it fairly stock with a few mods to add durability moreso than performance. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Start reading the Sticky's in each Generation. There is so much information in there you will read for hours on end. then go from there man.

Go with a 3rd Gen Can't go wrong but I'm partial to them.

I would love a 3rd gen, but I think they are going to be out of my price range.
