New Street Legal DOT Approved Lighting from Rigid Industries

Rigid Industries released several new products at SEMA 2014 and one of the many that caught our eye was the line of new DOT / SAE Certified Lights which meet federal requirements to be used on the road. Street Legal Rigid lighting is now available!

These SAE certified lights allow for a very wide, smooth beam with minimal beam height. This allows us to offer DOT (FMVSS 108) compliant LED lights for front fog lamps and auxiliary high beam usage. By complying with the Federal requirements, Rigid Industries LED light can now be used legally on a federal highway!

The Front Fog Lamp comes as a set in the ultra popular Dually housing. Using a new SAE optical system we provide a SAE J583 compliant beam that is 4x45o for the ultimate fog light. Now you can replace those worthless factory fog’s using one of our OE fog light kits and have LED lights that you can leave on - Rigid Industries 50481.

Auxiliary High Beam comes in our 6” E-Series using a new SAE Certified Light Series optical system, we create a 5x25o beam with over 40k peak candela and an amazing 20k candela out to almost 30o beam width! You’ll be able to see more in front and to the sides. Add a couple to your bumper and never have to worry about being hassled by law enforcement - Rigid Industries 106612.

To be FMVSS108 Compliant, Rigid Industries LED Lights passed certain SAE standards, test procedures and material testing; set to guide the quality of the product. With its unbreakable polycarbonate lens, durable UV-resistant powder-coat and patented optics, the SAE Certified Light Series Lights by Rigid Industries are the total lighting solution. The accomplishment of Rigid Industries to receive the SAE Certification displays Rigid Industries dedication to providing a total vehicle lighting solution, ON OR OFF THE ROAD!

A couple pics of the lights from Rigid's booth at SEMA. The new DOT/SAE beam pattern is excellent. Brilliant even light, but perfectly limited to a wide horizontal rectangle, exactly how we all wish our headlights were.

Difficult to get an output shot in the midst of 1000's of people, but this might give you an idea of the beam pattern. Very wide rectangle with an exact cutoff.

So what makes these DOT approved versus the current ones? The slit cover?

The lens & cover are the biggest differences, they create a beam that met the SAE / DOT standards. It was submitted for testing and approved for road use

Other then that, they are very similar to the Hyperspot Dually d2s.

The best way to describe DOT approved is there is a very distinct line or limit to the beam across the top. This is so other drivers are not blinded by properly adjusted lights. The requirement is for peoples safety.
Lights that are not DOT (True DOT certified not false claimes) have no focus and are very bright for on coming traffic. These are the ones most people are using, and complaining about being stopped by the cops etc. HID bulbs in a hologen housing is about the best example you can see.

The problem is most DOT compliant lights give a visual of less light because it is not "spraying all over the place". It just requires proper aiming and equal output.

According to this http://www.bikersrights.com/nhtsa/notapproved/A-13.pdf , DOT doesn't actually approve any lights, and while they might meet SAE standards that doesn't mean they are safe or legal to use on the road. The federal government doesn't regulate auxiliary lights, but they are working on regulating fog lights. (interesting discussion at NHTSA Notice: Glare from Headlamps and other Front Mounted Lamps - FMVSS 108) So it's up to your state if they are legal.

In Colorado, for example, you can't have lights mounted over 42 inches for aux lights or 30 inches for fog lights, and you can't have more than four lights on at a time. So roof mounted lights are never legal to use on the highway, and these fog lights are only legal if you don't use them with built-in fog lights at the same time.

And if they are not aimed correctly, they might cause excess glare and be unsafe or illegal.

Thanks for the mention of the state thing, I will clear some things up here regarding legality.

NTHSA does not certify anything, its all done by self-compliance. Rigid uses a third party company to test & certify that their lights meet NTHSA FMVSS 108 compliance. DOT is not a legal term, but is a trade symbol put on lights to show compliance.

The duallies meet FMVSS108 as well as the new but non-mandatory SAE J583 for front fog lights.
The 6" E series meet FMVSS108 as well as the new but non-mandatory SAE J581 for auxiliary upper beam lamps.

Although these lights meet all federal motor vehicle safety standards and regulations, be sure to check state & local laws to make sure you are legal.

Some quick output shots of the new DOT Approved Fogs with OEM Projectors from Total Automotive Performance team member @goneFXcrazy

Gives the truck a much wider light coverage area while still providing a DOT Compliant light cutoff. The range is also impressive, unlike standard reflector housings, the beam carries on nearly as far as the headlights depending on how you aim them. In these pictures they are aimed at the same level as the headlights but they should really be aimed a few inches lower for the real world.

As always PM/call/email us for our best deal but you'll have to act fast, these are FLYING off the shelf!

Low beams only

Low beams and DOT Fogs

All pictures taken at ~30-40ft from wall.
