stereo nerds

Alright guys I have a 02 4runner with the tape deck and I want a new stereo. I do know much about stereos but I want to remove the OEM and replace it with a deck that has a cubby below it for storage. I understand it’s easier to get the new cable connection for 20$ instead of splicing all the wires so what are my options. I don’t want to spend a lot of money on this, something good for $50 if that’s possible.

If your budget is that low, you might want to find something used. Even a wiring harness and dash kit will probably cost you $30. In my Audi I had an Alpine single DIN head unit (which is what will give you the cubby below) which I got for about $150 at Best Buy (so probably cheaper online). It had and aux 1/8" stereo input as well as a USB port which can control an iPhone/iPod or be used as a charger. It worked great and still had enough wattage to be plenty loud. I know that's more than you wanted to spend, but you could probably find something like that used, and it would fit your needs perfectly.

Ebay could be your friend here, since unlike parts subject to wear and tear, with a used stereo if it works it works. (Assuming you stick with a reputable brand)

I do suppose $50 is pretty low, and that would probably get me a crappy brand. So i basically need the dash kit, wiring harness and stereo.

Seems a lot of people on this forum recommend crutchfield for the ease of ensuring proper fit and support if needed. Browsing their sight shows a few $60ish units that should fit the bill...

Pick up a used Pioneer DEH-1300MP, its the only sub-50$ headunit that's worth having imo, I've tried the equivalent Kenwood and alpine units. They both broke after about 6 months.

You can always call and speak with their technicians. I've always had great service from Crutchfield. For your budget, I doubt you'll find anything better than the dash kits they offer. Although you may be able to find a dash kit similar that's cheaper somewhere else. I don't think (could be wrong) their dash kits are anything special - meaning it'll look nice enough and fill the gaps but you'll be able to tell its aftermarket.

Of course, it's been a while since I've done a head unit swap... the last few purchases from them were speakers only. So my knowledge may be a bit outdated.

Crutchfield is a good option. I got my amp from them and some install parts from them. Everything else I got on Amazon since I have Prime and it's typically a bit cheaper, so check that out too.
