so my 1988 runner go stuck (lets say over 2 hours) in a river with water over about half the door hight. i got it out thank god!Other than changing the oil, oil filter, the air filter/taking out the spark plugs and pushing the water out is there anything else i should do before starting it/anything i should worry about?

Water in Xfer case, frt and rr differentials and transmission. Likely did not happen but after 2 hours I would prefer to be safe than sorry with a high dollar repair.

You had better make damned sure the ECM is dry. Not sure about first gen's, but the 4th gens sits near the floor against the firewall if memory serves.

so far iv go new oil spark plugs air filter and oil filter. going to do the trans and diff fluids next. when i shoot the water out of the spark plugs a ton came out the first time but nothing after that. i can still hear water gurgles though... what should i do now for the engine to get ride of the water?

The ECM actually lives behind the glovebox on the 4th gens. But a Junction Connector that many of the ECM wires go through lives about 3" from the bottom of the floorpan on the driver's side A-Pillar section under the dash.

Shoot the cylinders full of carb cleaner and do it again. Then let it dry.

Not a big deal before you start the truck, but I'd go through all of the harnesses, motor/dash/body, and take apart and clean and dry every connector. Same for all the ground straps, all of them. If you don't, you sure as shit will develop electrical gremlins down the road.

So the truck starts and drives but having a lot of trouble with keeping power and the engine struggles. A popping sound also sometimes occurs from my air filter area, and pumping a lot of exhaust fumes out of the tail pipe. I believe that would that that be a problem with the mass air flow censor?

Is the check engine light on? Have you read the OBD codes?

Backfires through the intake often means ignition problems. Unburnt fuel all but confirms it. I would remove all possible ignition components and dry them using 90 pct isopropyl alcohol and a warm oven or sunlight. Replace the cap, rotor, and wires. Dry the coil, etc. Pull the plugs, see if they don't show soot or gasoline.

Maybe use a hose to thoroughly wash down the engine first; fresh clean water goes a long ways to address submersion damage.

photos of it now or photos of it stuck in the water. I couldn't get photos of it in the water was at night/dead phone. but pretty much was suck in the Klamath River and water up passed the battier. I found a bull frog at one point in my cab. also found out that a couple of rednecks had broke the dam to try and start a salmon run so if i didn't get it toad out then the truck would have been fully underwater by the next day

So changed oil 3 times now still found water in it, did the tranny twice found water in it. Ran seafoam through the engine and gas. Had to get a new Air mass flow sensor, dried out as much of the large tubing as possible. Seats and interior still soaked/wet, sound system parts in rice bags lol. grey (possible water?) smoke dumps out of exhaust. still having a miss fire (I think thats what it is) in the air box. It only occurs when starting up the truck cold) Going to take advice and look at the ignition for that. any other ideas. you think i need to do the transfer box fluid and front/rear diff.?
