Just a basic platform is really easy.

Sheet of plywood cut to length, with cutouts for wheel wells.

4x4 posts for legs, attached to plywood with 6 inch lag screws with large washers.

1x4 strips attached to bottom of legs.

I'll post more pics tomorrow.

I really like this. Simple and easy. If I ever do something like a storage/sleeping platform I am totally going along these lines

Total length depends how far back the front seats are.

I'll post pics of the build next time I'm sitting at my computer.

The plate is an electrical outlet mounting plate.

The lag screw is 6" long. Make sure you drill a pilot hole in the leg before you drive the lag screw so you don't split the leg.

Before I stapled on the carpet, I taped some cardboard around and on top of the head of the lag screw so it didn't poke through the carpet.

That extra little foot in the pics above goes here:

A full size futon mattress fits perfectly. During the day when not in use, we folded it in half, and held it in place with a ratchet strap.

Unhappy

I'd love to do something like this but it seems a family of 5 may be a tad cramped in there.

A family of five shouldn't be sleeping in a vehicle, though. Unless it is an RV

There was just enough room for the two of us. If three people are going to sleep back there, they better be very very friendly with each other.

I don't have a platform but i found if you roll out two single roll outs from REI and then two air mattresses from REI (singles too) it make a nice double bed and fits pretty much perfectly.
