Airbag recall??

Baught my 16 runner then dealer lets me know there's a form he forgot to have me sign so i tell him to send it to me. I recieved it today and its a recall notice for the pass side airbag not now but before 2019. So another words it will be recalled so they want me to sign off on paper saying if it does fail i cant sue them. What the heck is that all about? So my passenger is at risk each time i drive!! Anyone shed some light on this?

Pretty sure this is the recall...I just picked up a '16, didn't hear anything about this from my dealer.

All of the 5th Gens will eventually be included. FAQ's and models effected. When depends on where you live. Just turned in our 2010 corolla. Up to a year for a fix. Gave us a 2016 Camry for a loaner.

All of the American 5th Gen 4Runners are likely to be recalled for this safety issue.

OP - you should have bought a Canadian 2016 4Runner

Pretty much all Honda and Toyota (and others) cars that are on the road right now new or old will get this recall soon. Takata inflators are used by a lot of manufacturers since its such a small niche. They are starting with the older cars and working their way forward. I mean hey most cars that are getting sold now have a Takata inflator in it that will be recalled in the next few years. The news scares everyone to the point that they don't want to drive their car anymore. Honda took it as far as giving people a loaner (with a takata inlflator in it which will be recalled down the road) while they wait for a new inflator for the customers current car but they wont tell you that the loaner will get a recall soon because then instead of cars we would be seeing bicycles on the road and a lot more people walking

Couple things that dont make sence to me are why not switch out the airbag from takata and use a different company, maybe they have a contract that binds them to takata who knows and another thing is what if it fails and my passenger desides to sue me and toyota for faulty safety equipment? There seems to be no real evidence that proves it will not fail at any given time.

Highly doubt your passenger will or even CAN sue you. Your insurance company should be covering bodily harm (I would advise against the minimums if you frequent passengers)

This is purely a judgement call on your part but if it's bad enough the hospital has to treat you. Anything over what insurance covers (unless it's just a few hundred) I would let go straight to collections. Medical collections don't affect lending if you need a new auto loan.

So the more I've talked with various individuals and looked into this, the more I'm starting to realize that perhaps Airbags are not "lifetime" objects like the industry originally thought.

It may turn out in the next few years that Airbags will have a set lifespan. This seems to be the same opinion of some others in various positions I've spoken to as well. What that will mean for older vehicles is yet to be seen, we (as in the consumer, technician, and relative public outside of the NHTSA, Affected Manufacturers, and Takata) lack a lot of information on what's going on. As far as I know, the airbags we've recalled may end up being recalled again in a set amount of time for the same issue (this seems to have been indicated to some Honda owners/Technicians who passed it along to me, I haven't verified it yet), but if the issue is that the airbags do just degrade over time; that falls inline with that theory.

Much of the issue with the Takata airbags is that the descant or lack there of (in the older ones from my understanding) does not last nearly as long as they had originally hoped. So the airbag recall is preemptive in that they have roughly calculated how long it will take the inflators to degrade to a "potentially unsafe" state. So you'll see all the very humid areas get their inflators replaced first and drier areas following after that just like they have done with the current airbag recalls. The more important question that I can't seem to get a solid answer on and seems to be reinforcing the more common opinion that airbags may be less than lifetime is that even "new" airbags such as those in the 16's are being preemptively thrown into a future recall. Which means either they have not figured out a solution at the factory or that a solution may not be possible beyond setting an expiration date? More importantly what about the other airbag companies? Like I said, there's a lot of missing data that would help clear things up...

Question is what do we do as new owners? Demand new airbags from different company?

Wait until Toyota/Takata has determined that they have reached a threshold where a recall needs to be mobilized. There's not much you can really do, the airbags are not faulty at this point in time.

To answer another question; here is the short list on air bag manufactures:

Autoliv, Daicel, Takata , TRW and KSS.

I believe Takata is the largest globally and are the largest in North America with a plant near Spokane. This air bag issues is affecting all manufactures.

Autoliv were recent recalled by toyota:

Autoliv side airbags affected by 1.4 million-car recall

Daicel air bags were recent recalled in hondas:

Honda Recalls in Japan After Accident Involving Daicel Inflator - Bloomberg

TRW were recalled in a number of brands:

http://www.autonews.com/article/2015...gs-have-become

Couldn't find anything on key safety system.

All I can say is always keep your guard up.
