the 4runners they're using on Expidition Overland are pretty slick. They do however seem a little cramped inside is this the case?

I have owned a 2nd, two 3rd's, a 4th, and now a 5th. The 3rd gens are the coolest though. I keep going back and forth about getting a 1st gen or another 3rd to restore and keep as my weekend toy.

1st gen. Love my 84. She's a bit slow with the old 3Y but I'm undecided as yet about what donk will replace it. Either a diesel variant of the same gen to keep it original, or transplant a 3.8 v6 buick that are found in every 3rd shed over here in aus. Local guys have bellhousing adapter kits already made and on the shelf so... pretty tempting but I like keeping things original.. might just need a bigger shed for more projects 😂

This is as far as I could get with the time I have. Had 2 87's and while certainly not a powerhouse, lock it in 4 low and it would go just about anywhere. Both of mine were in pretty much mint condition until they met their demise. Last one had a brand new crate motor, Rancho shocks, all new other suspension related parts, Michelin LTX MS tires and then got totaled. My 95 limited is in near perfect shape and very sound but wish I could have found another 1st as I drool every time I see one.

3rd gens!

All about the 3rd gens! Classic look, plenty of power and did I mention, dang sexy?! I just bought one a few days ago, 2002 with 149,000 miles. Always wanted one as a kid so I figures why not!

3rd Gen 96-98, 99-02 with the fat lip bumper just don't do it

1st gen is nice being able to take off the top. Bought my 1st one in 1986 with 1500 miles on the clock

5th gen front end is fugly as hell.

I'll give a biased vote for the 2nd gen, if you can get one with a 22re.... There's literally step-by-step instructions to straight axle them. You can easily turn them into crawlers or just simple and reliable off road machines. The 2nd gen is still a plentiful and relatively cheap as well....

i've owned the 1st gen when i was in high school and that thing still drives like a champ with over 250k miles. LOVED IT.

i now own the 5th gen and i just love the overall new look of the 5th gen. in love with the front end of the new T4R! looks mean!

I've had an 88 sas, a 93 and now an 03. The 93 has been my favorite though. I bought it for $900 with the head gasket blown. Toyota warrantied it in 2014 under the head gasket recall. It was slow and sucked gas but I loved that truck. The only reason I got rid of it is bc a buddy wanted it and I found a smoking deal on my 2003 4runner. I'm fact my 03 doesn't have many more options than the 93 had.

I like the modern things of the fifth gen, but think the first gen is a classic. Would love to get my hands on one.

I have to agree, though I have to extrapolate slightly:

Owned: 1985, 1994, 1998 (supercharged manual), and 2006. I really want a 5.5 Pro or TEP.

85' was the best car I ever owned. With mud terrains I still got 20 MPG around town, and you can't beat the Bikini top in summer. The 2nd generation had the worst toyota motor of all time, though the look was epic. The 3rd gen's are still one of the best looking, the clean ones in MN looks better than most of the new SUVs out there. 4th gens are solid but mine is long in the tooth and in need of enhancements- I am not willing to invest. The back half of the 5th generation are really awesome and the technology is huge sense of security. So my vote is:

1st Gen (84-85 specifically)
5th Gen (+14 (Pro specifically)
3rd Gen (+00)
4th Gen
0 Gen (Trekker)
2nd Gen

Miss this truck sooo bad... PM me and i will tell you my salvage to glory story.

I've had two 1st gens; one bought new and sold at 100k miles, two 3rd gens, and a 4th gen and also have a 2016 Tacoma which has similarities (maybe) to a 5th gen. My favorite is the 1st gen but it's probably the least practical for middle age and baby seats and groceries. I think the 3rd gen is one of the most perfect vehicles for me. I wish I could still buy them new. The 4th gen is bloated and has terrible blind spots. I hate the push button 4WD. Why did they do away with the cool factor of a second shifter? I never bothered driving a 5th gen because I need a Tacoma for the bed but all I see is more bloat and electronic conveniences that lead away from the things that made the originals great. Just MO.
