I know this is not exactly 5th gen related, but I think it is very relevant since this vehicle will most likely be the only truck that future 5th gen buyers consider.
GM finally came out with something to shake up the off-road market and I hope Toyota will respond with something besides the same old appearance packages.
This truck has a lot going for it.
* 4cyl diesel 181hp/369tq (31mpg hwy) or 308hp/275tq v6
* Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve (DSSV) shocks - these are super high tech and tuned for extreme offroad with good road manners
* front and rear e-lockers, locking center (9 4wd modes) including locked rear in 2wd High
* 8 speed auto (should provide a great crawl ratio in 4L)
* high clearance,(10.3" ground clearance from the factory)
* 3.5-inch wider track and 2-inch lift, high strength front control arms
* Improved approach and departure angle
* 31" GYr Duratrack on 17" wheels std
* full skids and sliders from the factory
This truck is the real deal when it comes to off-road and overlanding. It will give many future Toyota 4runner and Tocoma buyers great pause. I know I will be checking them out.
If the manufacturing quality is there - these might just give Toyota pause. Depending on price of course. My guess is its going to run north of $50k for a diesel. ($10K buys a lot of gas - about 100,000 miles worth). Checks all the boxes except tire size. I'm curious about the axle designs and strength though.
Seems more a competitor to the Tacoma, the article refers to the Tacoma TRD.
I do not think it is competition with the 4runner, in general, because the 4runner is an SUV. Also, the 4runner's reliability and longevity (maybe add safety?) is almost legendary, and attracts buyers (like myself).
But it is pretty cool little truck, like a small Raptor. I really wish this is what Toyota came out with as their TRD, a Raptor like deviation from the non-TRD line.
Over all it's great for everyone. The manufacturers are starting to battle for this
Offroad market and that means bigger and better things for the consumer.

Yes it is more aligned with the the Tacoma, but many 5th gen owners (including myself) considered a Tacoma. I was actually looking for a Tacoma, but switched to a 4Runner because the used Tacomas were way overpriced for what you got compared to a 5th gen in 2013.
And yes, Toyota's have outstanding reliability and a good track record, but the other brands are catching up quickly.
The point is that many people here (not all) buy a 5th gen for over-landing and general off-road use. The top overland vehicles at the moment in the US are the 4runner, Wrangler, and Tacoma There is really nothing else in the segment and this zr2 is going to really shake things up.
I personally can't wait to check one out.

I've been burned three times by GM products with less than 1,500 miles on the clock. I will enjoy seeing these in other people's hands. Pretty much like brodozers. Cool to see a huge full size truck lifted feet rather than inches. Not in my front yard.
No pause given here, just something to check out at stoplights. Maybe if it pushes Toyota to come out with something 'badder', but I'm a pig in poop with my modern dinosaur 4Runner.
It does have factory sliders. I'll be taking a look at this this weekend, I'll be checking out the LA Auto show.

After my last GM truck - never again will a GM product ever park in my driveway. But I like the direction. I'd love to see a Toyota OEM long travel setup. Then again i'd be happy with a Prado 150 with a 1FTV or a LC76 with the 1FTV.

Weak link on H2, H3 and other "specialty offroad builds" have been the tie rods. See if you can't get a pick of them on this truck when you see it. Hopefully they're bigger than the Caprice sized tie rods they use on their so-called 1T Duramax 4x4 front ends.
