Should I replace these tires?

I'm horrible at when to replace tires. I know people that drive them bald but with winter coming up I'd figure it wouldn't hurt to get some opinions. They are Goodyear silent armors, not that it matters but that have 55k on them. I was debating replacing now or waiting until tax time.

Thoughts?

Just measure. 1/16 is worn out. 3/8 to 1/2 is around new. I never let them get down past a 1/4 because the shallow grooves will not get rid of the water as fast and hydroplaning is more likely. My opinion.

^ This. I just replaced mine - same reason: winter coming. They had 5K left but I've got a 1500 mi road trip in Jan.

I did a lot of reading and 3/32 is where replacement is considered due. I kept my takeoffs, saving $3 apiece disposal, and then sold them to a used tire shop.

I will not take chances with tires, brakes, or battery.

There's nothing wrong with your tires. Depends a lot on what your driving requirements and weather is like, plus budget, plus your pucker-factor (mine is low).

Those are getting pretty low, I'd probably replace them too. But I'm a wimpy old man like @philsey .

The rubber strip running between the shoulder blocks is called a wear bar. The manufacturer puts that in as a visual indicator. When your tread is worn down even with the wear bar, the tires are unsafe. Yours aren't to that point yet, you could run them this winter and be safe as long as you keep it slow when the road is nasty and leave lots of room for braking. But you could also pull the trigger on some nice pretty clean new tires and know that your decision is mostly justified. ;)

everyone seems to be focused on the tread.

personally I would be more worried about how I can see the age cracks or checking in the tire between the tread. I would poop can those tires if it was my truck

Thanks. I think I'm going to pull the trigger. Only reason I was trying to wait is because I just replaced the tires on my wife's camry. Plus I can now get bigger tired. Yay

Those would be in the trash this week. I don't take chances with my tires, if I ever have to ask then I replace.

Okay. Tires are getting replaced in a week once I get paid. Now my only decision is 265 vs 275/70/17. Probably going to stay 265.
