Anyone using a portable gas tank on their roof rack?

I'm curious if anyone has used a portable boat fuel tank on their roof rack? Then when you need to use it, use a small pump to transfer it to 4runner tank. It can easily be temporarily strapped to the rack as well for trips.

Here's an example of one: Attwood Corporation ASM Gauge 6-Gallon Gas Tank

If you have, how well does that work? do they swell too much or any other issues?

I was thinking of using one because they can sit pretty low and the fill cap is on top. All other gas storage solutions aren't really meant to be laid on their side.

What do you guys think?

As long as its fully sealed, I dont see it being any worse than a plastic gerry can on the roof rack.

True.
The only reason I don't want a normal jerry can is that if you lay those down you have to unstrap it and stand it back up everytime you want to vent it. Plus there's probably more risk of it leaking while it's on it's side. With that said, I still might end up just using a jerry can style and laying it on it's side.

What brand RR? Bajaracks makes a jerry can mount for their baskets which I've been eyeing.

Those would work if you have lots of area. If your rack is full of other things maybe this as a compromise: https://www.amazon.com/No-Spill-1450...gallon+gas+can

Shorter and wider than a Jerry can, but not as spread out as the OP's.

I'm only going to have a rola rack for now. Eventually, I'll get a better one. I like the jerry can holder from Baja, but I was wanting to lay them flat on their side so they are as low as possible. I still have to be able to fit in the garage.

Thanks for the suggestion. One reason I liked the tanks is that they have strapping points to make it easier to just strap to the rack. These shorty cans could work too.

Makes sense. I have the same problem, but don't usually roll with cans on the roof unless I'm going somewhere where they're required. I got the BR ladder to make the install/removal of items on the rack easier for me since I didn't opt for running boards or sliders (yet).

Don't think you need a pump.. just simple clear tubing and siphon it down to the fill port.

I'd recommend at least using a cheap shaker- or bulb-prime siphon instead of the old suck-and-gag method.

Shakers are cheapest but require a few inches of fluid in the upper tank to start. With these you want to siphon the entire upper tank once you get going.

Bulb-primes are slightly more expensive (still generally less than $20) but can be started as long as the upper liquid covers the end of the hose.

Ive beenlooking into getting a few of these for on my roof rack:

RotopaX 1-Gallon Gasoline fuel pack | TwistedThrottle.com

You can probably find them cheaper elsewhere, I just grabbed a quick link. I currently have a jerry can mounted on the rear, but I get a little nervous in case of a rearend collision.
