Interesting information.

I've been seriously considering a new Grand Cherokee since Toyota doesn't seem to want to update the 4Runner any time soon apparently. The Grand Cherokee is exactly one year behind the 4Runner (7.8 years vs 8.8 years) for length of time kept by owners, which would be surprising if they were truly as problematic as people here make them out to be. And the Grand Cherokee actually edges out the Tacoma (7.7 years).

Just remember there's a huge difference in how long you keep vehicle and resale value after that amount of time. Get that Grand Cherokee and watch the resale value plummet. Just something to think about.

I generally keep my vehicles more than ten years and usually put more than 150k miles on them in that time. Resale value isn't a factor for me. My 4th gen isn't worth much at all at this point.

There is a difference between being 'kept' by owners and being 'stuck with' it. Most people aren't going to trade out of something they are upside down on.

I know someone who traded in a 1.5 year old Overland that he paid 48k for. He got 33k out of it and it only had like 18k miles. Most people probably don't want to end up eating that much of a loss so they just finish off the loan.

Growing up my parents always had toyotas ( where my love for 4runners came from). Anyways they always drove them till the wheels fell off. (4 of us siblings wreaking havoc on them). But they would put a solid 200k+ miles on them, and then buy a new one when it came time. I'm rolling over 115k on my 4th gen. I plan to DD it atleast another 100k miles before getting a new DD.

Bought my 2001 in late 2000 and finally gave it to my niece in late 2014. Hope I like my 2016 that long

My sister bought a 2013 Grand Cherokee overland - a lot of awesome technology, really a beautiful Jeep. She's had it for about 4 years now and has about 120K miles. No major problems but I think most new cars won't see many issues until 100K miles, So I'm interested to see if her's starts breaking down on her.

I was undecided between the Grand Cherokee and T4R for months, knowing that I could get the Jeep probably a bit cheaper than the T4R. But I was also looking long term, as it was going to be the first new vehicle I've ever purchased. That's why I ended up with the T4R. I hope their reputation of reliability pays off for me.

Sure, but we're talking an average of around 8 years. I'd have to say by that time 99% of people would have paid off their loan. So it should be a choice based upon something other than still owing money on a vehicle.

I'm sure the reliability will be just fine on your 4Runner. I've only had a few problems with my 4th gen over the years. The biggest issue was the damn brake calipers. The pistons seize in them every two years like clockwork. I've also had a few problems with the wipers not working. Currently my biggest issue is chassis rust, which definitely has me concerned because it's getting really bad. It's a shame because the body is flawless, not a scratch, dent. or spot of rust anywhere, but look underneath and it looks like hell. So keep an eye on your undercarriage. I washed mine after every winter, but it still rusted to hell on me.

Check out the reliability matrix on dashboard light to see one of the major factors contributing to this: Toyota 4Runner Reliability - Dashboard Light

I love checking this stuff out, but when someone starts telling me a JGC or JW will last longer I just point to this. The Jeep stats here: http://www.dashboard-light.com/reports/Jeep.html

I sold jeeps for awhile. Grand Cherokees lose value bad. Traded people out of a summit and they had lost $20k in 2 years and 18k miles. They are more tech advanced but I am not willing to take that hit.

My brother just traded in his Grand Cherokee Overland at 3 years old and 35,000 miles and he got $32,000 for it. He paid $44,000 for it originally, so a $12,000 hit over 3 years. That's not bad. And he still got $7,000 off of MSRP of his new Jeep. So he basically traded his old Jeep plus $10,000 for his new Jeep that had a sticker price of nearly $50,000.
