The fact that it still has a real transmission and not CVT is a major plus.

A TRD Off road Rav4 is still less silly than leaving expedition gear bolted to a daily driver or paying $50 for a headliner velcro patch

The glaring failure point on the 18 rav4 and prior was the exhaust down pipe. My parents have one. It really has no business going anywhere you might encounter a large rock. And by large I mean 5 or 6 inches tall. It's a fine grocery getter and ski hill shuttle mobile. Overall it's a great vehicle IMO. But it really doesn't belong any further from the pavement than most sedans. Possibly they re-worked the new one to protect the vulnerable bits on the bottom? If not - I wouldn't take it any further into the woods than I wanted to walk home.

You can see the unprotected exhaust pipe in this picture. It's very exposed.

You can call it an SUV if you like, but it's not built like a modern unibody SUV. The 4Runner is a body on frame truck. It's not a pick up truck, but it's built on a frame exactly like a pick up truck.

A lot of folks say it rides like a truck too, and they buy a front wheel drive or AWD SUV instead.

____________

The RAV4 is nice enough, but it doesn't have the interior room I require or the towing capacity. And it probably won't handle the deep, soft sand at Cape Hatteras.

Yes I'm fully aware it's a body on frame. If you look on Toyota's website it's listed with the SUVs not the trucks. The point is some dude said men buy trucks which is false.

I’m torn between the RAV4 TRD Off Road and a 4R. I live in the city, so the RAV4 is probably more practical during the week. But on the weekend I like to get out of the city and the 4R would probably be better. I think it comes down to 2 things:
1. How much can a RAV4 handle? I am not going to be climbing rocks or blazing hydro cuts, but I want to get my mountain bike, kayak, SUP and hiking shoes to the best spots. How much do you think this RAV4 can handle?
2. I like the idea of having a foldout tent on the roof and a fridge in the back. Drive wherever you want and sent up camp in minutes. For those that have this setup, do you leave it on all the time, or have to install it whenever you’re heading out on a trip? And is this a PITA?

If the RAV4 can handle what I’m likely to throw at it, and the 4R is going to be a ton of work to attach the gear every time I want to use it, well...

Oh, I thought my point was that you said the 4Runner wasn't a truck.

This is a big step up from the 1986 Subaru GL wagon I used on the Outer Banks beaches for 14 years. That thing would go anywhere in the sand on 185/70-13 tires. Dual range 5 speed, factory skid plate, 3 position manually adjustable rear shocks and armored exhaust. All factory, including the white spoke wheels. The front sub frame finally rusted apart.

This thread blows my mind. Read beyond knowing I am totally in love with my 4Runner and it is defiantly my favorite vehicle I've owned. And I've owned a lot of vehicles. My wife's students would say "If you love it so much you should marry it".

The Rav4 TRD Off-Road from my point of view will be a great hit!

From watching the YouTube videos about it, it's earned that TRD badge.

For the folks that think they are small inside or just a Camry hatch you should go look at one. I think it has more room than my 4Runner. I compared side by side at the dealership before I picked up the 4Runner. If my wife didn't get motion sick from riding in the back, seats sit down low and she's short, I might have taken it home over the 4Runner.

Yes it's less capable, but I'm probably never going to use all the potential of a 4Runner.
Yes I wouldn't have loved it as much, but I would have loved the price more.
Yes, it doesn't have as much power, but I would have loved the extra fuel economy.

It really should do great for how 90% of 'Off-Roaders' including me Off-Road.

For all the people who want TECH TECH TECH the Rav4 is bursting with tech.

As for the 4Runner being a truck... It's not... Sorry... A 4Runner is an SUV. It's a real honest to goodness traditional SUV. Trucks have beds and are designed to haul and tow, aka carry cargo. If body on frame makes a truck then my 1995 Crown Vic was a truck.

I hypothesize a lot of people are getting upset because they think it compromises the status of their TRD badge 4Runner. I think it will do the opposite. I think it will lure people away from Jeep and Subaru. Those people will fall in love with the rugged reliability of Toyota. Then if they need more Off-Road prowess upgrade to the 4Runner.

Just my 2 cents.

In my book, to qualify as “off-road”, vehicle needs to be a) sturdy and reliable b)have tires with enough sidewall and tread c) drive all four wheels with some form of traction control d) have at least 8”/20cm of clearance. f) be driven not by an idiot.

In that order. This new RAV4 qualifies. There is an infinite road to improve upon the minimum, and there is always be a tougher suv/truck/truck than yours.

For my use, 4Runner with some mods is the minimum, but frequency when I need it over RAV4 is fairly small. I can think of only a few of my regular hunting and camping spots where I would not make it in RAV4. I mostly care about 4Runner being able to take a winch and rock rails for emergencies and less need for a spotter.

My son has a rav4. It is just so small feeling to me. I would have to pass. I like my SUV, uh, 4runner too much.

Had a guy who wanted to show me his "Toyota SUV" to me. I was expecting a 4Runner, maybe even a Sequoia. I was looking way deeper into the parking lot until he told me to turn around.

It was a RAV4. *Boner shrinks*

These are crossovers, the Caitlyn Jenner of automobile segments. Not SUVs. The definitions are so screwed up.
