I think this TRD Off Road RAV4 will be perfect for a ton of people who aren't doing anything hardcore (so about 99.999% of drivers on the road and even a vast majority of those who actually touch dirt). People just want to be able to get out there a little bit, and with this they will be able to do that.
The "Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD" that this gets is actually pretty solid and is a different AWD system from LE/XLE trims for RAV4. It functions similar to ATRAC but engages a lot more smoothly and is way quieter (uses dog clutches instead of the brakes to stop the wheel without traction). I have actually been able play around with it, including situations where you had a wheel totally unloaded and in the air, and was impressed with how well it did.
For those who say it is small inside, you have definitely not been inside a new RAV4. My wife drives a Highlander and the 2019 RAV4 does not seem dramatically smaller inside. I have driven one at length and at 6'2" I fit totally fine.

If the RAV4 can handle what I’m likely to throw at it, and the 4R is going to be a ton of work to attach the gear every time I want to use it, well...

Get the RAV.

Best car I ever owned was a 2006 RAV4 - V6. Beautiful engine. Build like a tank. Too bad they stopped making it. I’d probably bought another if they still made the V6 and made one with actual low range. Clearance wasn’t as important to me as low range - without the low range, I’d have to mad dog it up some loose terrain instead of being able to crawl up. Mad dogging is fun, but not when I don’t want to break my vehicle.
I’d be sold on RAV4, 3.5 V6, low range and ATRAC!!

2019 cargo volume in cubic feet according to Toyota:
RAV4 = 69.8/37.6
4Runner = 89.7/47.2
_____________
Who was it that first named some of the little vehicles CUV's? Cute Utility Vehicles. Not that a RAV4 is little, but the question just popped up.

This 2016 TEP w/KDSS is a big step up from the 1986 Subaru GL wagon I used on the Outer Banks beaches for 14 years. That thing would go anywhere in the sand on 185/70-13 tires. Dual range 5 speed, factory skid plate, 3 position manually adjustable rear shocks and armored exhaust. All factory, including the white spoke wheels. The front sub frame finally rusted apart.

These are crossovers, the Caitlyn Jenner of automobile segments. Not SUVs. The definitions are so screwed up.

Don't bring Bruce Jenner into this...

So I guess my question would be, after watching the YouTube video on the rav4 trd, is this better than a 4runner sr5 since the power train auto engagements seem to be different?
To me, it seems more like a Limited in drive train ability with an 8 speed auto and smaller footprint. Maybe I'm wrong in the comparison.
I do like the fact it has a real transmission as a cannot stand CVT transmissions either.

Food truck is a step van not a truck.
4Runner doesn't have a bed or deck and separate cab. So not a truck. My NV Passenger van is built on the same frame as the Titan truck. But it's a van because no bed or deck for cargo. I can't remove the box or equipment on the back without removing the cab.

My wife and I just got back from delivering a round kitchen table, a leaf, and 4 chairs to a former coworker. They easily fit in my truck. I haven't seen the woman since I retired in 2012, but my wife still works with her. The woman must be 55 or 60 by now, but that's beside the point.
After I hauled the set inside, she said how good it was to see me and congratulated us on getting married last year, gave me a hug as I was leaving, and then she said, "NICE TRUCK!!!"
So your lengthy explanation is for nothing. I know a truck when I see one and so does this woman who drives an old Lincoln Town Car.
You've been outvoted.
Firetrucks don't have beds anyway, so you're attempt at an explanation falls flat.
And a step van is a truck. Everybody knows that. Here are 318 step van trucks for sale...

Honda Passport will have 3.5 v6, and torque vectoring AWD. Viable alternative to the new RAV4.

Facts don't care about votes.
My grandma calls my 4Runner a "nice minivan". As do my father and brother, but their just being jerks.
Fire truck without the rear equipment. Making it a truck. AKA the cab is still usable without the rear body. I install radio equipment in probably 70-100 fire trucks a year. Trust me, the cab and rear sections are different independent parts. If it was a fire van my life would be SOOOO much easier.
Step van is a van... It's in the name. It's not a step truck, step sedan, step roadster. It's step van. By the same logic if a step van is a truck then a Ford Transit is a truck. "Oh but they have chassis frames so it's a truck" No, the big cut out behind the driver makes it not able to be driven legally on the road without a van body, ambulance shell, etc etc.
Here is another picture I found on google. The rear part can't be removed without the entire cab. So it's a van or an SUV. Personally I'd rather it be an SUV.
Either way, call it what you like. I'm just factually correct. LOL

Honestly, this is probably what I'll end up getting in a few years. While I love my 3rd gen, it is getting older and I am getting more and more to the point where I want a newer car. While I like the new 4Runners, they're just way too overkill for what I realistically need. This new RAV4 ticks the most boxes of things I'm looking for and I like the exterior styling a lot more than the previous gen. I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more beef in the engine department and am definitely curious to see how it performs on steep mountain passes.
All that being said, I don't personally see any reason to need/want the TRD version but am not opposed to it either.

I just can't believe there's guys referring to their RAV4 as "built like a tank". All that a front wheel drive based SUV needs is 4LO? Hahahaha. Actually Suzuki built a RAV4 competitor back in 2008 that ticked all those boxes. No one bought it.
