Blue ridge mountains VA to TN

I'm planning a road trip visiting some friends and sleeping in my 4R along the way.

Wondering if anybody knows of any off-road boondocking trails in the area between the Shenandoah and Gatlinburg TN?

More specifically in the Gatlinburg TN/NC area.

Have you done anything like this before? You can view sites like freecampsites.net and I use maps to find NF or WMA land where we can camp for the night. Takes some planning but if you're sleeping inside the vehicle, you've got more options than most. Can always crash in the Walmart parking lot.

In my younger years I used to camp all over New York and Canada extensively. But this is my first 4 wheel drive vehicle that allows me to go just about anywhere and sleep in it. I'll check those out.

I'm kind of looking to wing it. So it's going to get interesting.

We basically winged it for 2.5 months around the U.S. Mostly camping in free camping spots but also utilizing camp grounds and the random motel. Found some crazy spots for sure! I would book places (that required it) maybe a day or so in advance; that's how we got the last spot at Yellowstone for a few days. If you've got time, why bother with a schedule right?

We definitely want to do it again; I just need to find the time.

A little eastward but not too much of a detour but I think you might like it.

Valle Crucis is a beautiful area, and the two Mast Country Stores are well worth the stop (2/10 of a mile apart, one is a general store and the other is a clothing/outdoor equipment store).

That looks great!

I was thinking about doing the same type of setup: build a sleeping box on that side, but higher so that it could fit 2 wolf packs underneath. The platform would have to go all the way to the front passenger seat though and could be heavy/bulky. Right now I just have a box I built but not for sleeping.

Having the head clearance is really nice. Had a terrible storm here in Tennessee and it was totally fine to chili in the back of the truck for 4 hours till I fell asleep.

Trip turned into a multi month adventure! Just got back last month.

First hit a bunch of campgrounds through the Shenandoah, Blue ridge and Smoky mountains in TN. Then I headed north to ME to Baxter state park and the White mountains in NH finally ending in the Adirondacks in NY. Took a few months but it was epic!

Couldn't have done it with out my 4Runner.

Ill post some pictures once i upload them.

I travel a lot and always sleep in my 4R. I’ve noticed since Covid happened it’s been harder and harder to find Walmart’s that let you stay overnight. The last time I went to the SLC area every Walmart I pulled into had no overnight parking signs posted on every light pole. I also mountain bike and have had better luck sleeping at the trailheads then parking lots.
