Why you should be thankful a 4Runner is old school

YouTube: Why old school 4Runners are still good and reliable

The only cool thing about new cars (specifically turbocharged ones) is that it's so easy to make them go fast. A brand new Golf GTI can make up to 100hp extra from just a tune...

Yea, turbo's also work good at altitude since they shove more air into an engine. The negative is that the additional stress prematurely wears on the engine. Same with a supercharger. The 4.0 naturally aspirated engine is rock solid even though some complain about its lack of power. Same goes with the old school 5 speed transmission, less complicated more reliable. There are plenty of horror stories about the new 8+ speed computerized transmissions.

Coming from numerous VW's (both diesel and gas) with forced induction, that's exactly why I was initially leaning toward an F-150 with the Coyote V8, but then eventually settled on the 4Runner. A naturally aspirated engine, with simple old school tech strongly appealed to me.

Yes the 4.0L and 5-speed auto have been around for a long time, but I'm hoping this rig will last me at least 25 years. I don't plan on it being a daily driver for more than a few years. As long as I take care of it, keep the miles down, and hopefully avoid accidents, I have absolutely no doubt it will do just that.

I could be horribly wrong, but I think the only technological difference between the two engines is that the 5.0L Coyote is direct injection. Hey Chevy is still using pushrod engines if you want simplicity lol

MY GARAGE
I AM glad the 4Runner is "old school" - that's one of the main reasons I bought it.

The Coyote has both port injection for low speeds and light loads (less carbon fouling!!), and direct injection for higher speeds and heavier loads - best of both worlds.

We have Chevrolets for our company work trucks. Let's just say I'm not a fan.

Wouldnít an overhead cam be less complicated as there are no pushrods?

The Coyote is a beast of an engine, Iíll just say that.

Except for the voice, the guy on that video reminds me of Dennis Hopper!
