I'm not sure about other states but in South Carolina you have 4 weeks after you purchase a vehicle to get it registered, just have the bill of sale and notarized, title signed and notarized into your name and you must also have a current insurance binder for the vehicle in your possession.
If you don't have a dealer tag expect to get pulled over at some point.
Every used vehicle I have purchased was from a private seller and I have been pulled over in most of them because of no tag, and all except 2 times I had to educate the LEO on the South Carolina state law giving you 4 weeks to register the vehicle, after they got on the radio and or computer they came back and said have a nice day, the 2 times I didn't have to do the education it was State Troopers
