finding legal trails in your area

I live in NE Ohio and I can't seem to find any legal trails around my area. I see a lot out west but not many around me. the closest by me is about 6 hrs away. so, how do I find trails around me that are legal to drive on? don't get me wrong, if I have to drive 6 hours to get there I will, id just prefer something closer.

All Trails App

I am a new user to All Trails App.... but I have had great luck in finding legal, off-roading trails using this app on my iPhone. I believe there is an Android version as well.

You're talking about public land trails I'm guessing. Don't come to Texas, only 3% of the land is open to the public & highly restricted with severe penalties; 97% is private & fenced off. It's really sad that many states do not offer readily accessible land for the public to consume.

I lived in NE Ohio for the last 38 odd years.

Not many public trails accessible to SUVs in Ohio.

Your best bet is checking out the myriad of abandoned roads in the east / southeast of the state. A lot of those are pretty gnarly, and are totally legal. A good way to find those is with a DeLorme Gazeteer.

There's a thread on TW that I contributed to a lot when I lived in Ohio, some of my posts have good descriptions, pics, and GPS coordinates of abandoned roads that I found by basically exploring with a DeLorme. If you search within the thread starting more towards the beginning under my user name you'll find the posts. If you lurk there a bit you'll get some good intel.

I'm also in Cincinnati! I've been thinking of heading out to Hocking Hills area to do some exploring!

I’m happy with Texans owning Texas rather than the Fed. Gov.

I would rather the other way. I hate having to drive hours just to find a place to offroad. Texas is messed up in that way. I feel like there is no freedom here. I miss living in Nevada where there was public land access everywhere.

Texas will never be a Socialist leaning state. You trespass on someone's property and you might get shot.

IDK have you been around Dallas or Austin areas. They are looking pretty socialist (at least compared to 15 years ago). And i have no issues with someones property rights. that is one thing Texas got right along with the castle doctrine. But if you like to hunt, camp or offroad it is very difficult to live in Texas. There is very little public property so you have to travel very far or know someone who will let you use their property, or have deep pockets. I live well outside of the DFW area and I was looking at some land. For bare land in Hunt county in the country close to where I live the best deal I found was over $10k an acre for bare land. And I know I can get 150 mile+ away from DFW and find cheap land but that goes back to travelling several hours.

I would much rather live in a state that has good access to public lands like Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, or Idaho (most of which are less socialist than Texas).

I usually look for national forest lands. Typically there are always some decent trails in the local National forest. Gaia GPS is a good paid app for finding trails and this is a good webpage for finding trails in the nationa forests:

Interactive Visitor Map

I would also recommend talking to locals to see if you can find some trails or offroad parks. Hope that helps but being in the Northeast I think your options are very limited. To find more available public lands you will need to go west of the rockies.
