Car covers & heat, cover no help at all

I purchased a car cover at carcover.com NOT to be confused with the one that has an S carcovers.com

Today I put the cover on at 8 am. it is boiling hot here 95 degrees full sun. I reached under my car cover at 5 pm and nearly burned my hand, the thing was hot as hell. Just as hot as if no cover was on.

Am I expecting to much, I bought one of there best covers the Gold Shield 5L.

It is absolutely worthless. The site posted thousands of reviews, Have I been had ???? It is so thin you can see through the fabric.

I just checked and the 5L ibought was supposed to be 5 layers, the one I have looks like it has 2. It was sent in a 5L bag. 2004 Toyota 4Runner Car Covers | Perfect Fit Car Covers | CarCover.com

1 hour after t4r is in the shade inside of car is 110 degrees.

so you put a cover on a vehicle in 95 degree weather and expected it to do what?

I do not see how a car cover would keep a car cool that is parked in the sun all day. people in AZ do this when it is 120 outside and I always thought it was to protect the dash, interior, and paint from damage caused by the sun...not keeping the car "cool".

@GripT4R No car covered with a cover should have a hood / door so hot it makes you draw back and sting and would have burned if left there, a cheap T-shirt can block the sun better. This car cover lets light through, not what you would expect for 5 layers.

FWIW - I use a Covercraft windshield shade.. All other windows are tinted.

I know folks use Clear UV 'tint' for the windshield..

I'm not sure that a car cover is made to reduce the heat.
I thought it was just for protecting the finish from the weather.
Their claim says it can "resist" dessert heat.
(not the same thing)
You are essentially covering your car with a "bag"...
so naturally, it will keep the heat from escaping
more than it will prevent it from coming in.

Materials and the color matters. Black covers will cook your car. Get a refund. Spend a little bit extra and get a CoverCraft. I have one for my Fiesta and it's semi-reflective silver which is better insulating that opaque materials, especially black.

I've also been scammed in the past with a Chinese-made car cover that was "waterproof" but you could see right through it.

or, wash and wax the paint regularly to protect it from the sun.

Tint the windows, and get sun shades to protect the interior from the sun.

I've never heard of a car cover designed to reduce the temp of a car, and if your cover has a fleece liner, you are essentially wrapping it up in a winter coat and guaranteeing it will get even hotter.

Unfortunately, I think you've bought something mistakenly thinking it will do something it's not designed for.

Late to the party, I know.

Ok, Long story short, researched a lot to keep the interior of my sedan down because my lithium battery generator (flexopower 444) doesn't like high heat (which is odd for a South African product aimed at overlanders...) anyway, came across this thing: Cool Cap Heat Blocking Car Covers and bought it for my sedan and the damn thing works!

My black Accord in the Eastern Sierra sun could get up to 150 degrees plus but when I put this ugly ass thing on it, it rarely gets to 100 degrees inside (I did lower the windows a bit). So now I am planning on getting this guys tarp and just tossing it over the back of my 4Runner and see if it works. And of course, since it's October... I'll probably wait until spring to order it.

All that to say, if the sun never hits the surface of the car, it will be MUCH cooler inside. After all, beer is fragile.

summer days i use this. takes a while to install them but i think I've gotten pretty quick with it. keeps the interior super cool and looks super cool! No ugly tarp cover but i wouldn't mind getting the reflective tarp thing either.

Unfortunately these are imported from Japan and pretty costly but id bet you can make something similar if you know how to sew.

A coat of wax is applied once a season.

car covers suck imo....

Thanks for the link! I'll be doing the same thing since I have to park my runner outside, and would rather the paint not get covered in sap from all of the trees. The heat reflection looks like a nice bonus.
