Roof Bag or Cargo Box for Frontrunner 3/4 Rack?

Our family vacation is coming up in 5 weeks and I’m trying to improve the luggage situation.

I have an older Thule cargo box (approx 66x38x16) that I’ve been fastening to the stock roof rails. Because I don’t trust the box, I ratchet strap it shut and use rubber tie downs over the top. I have a tendency to over engineer.

I just ordered a FrontRunner Slimline 3/4 rack that I’m planning on securing the Thule cargo box or buying the new Thule Motion XT (size large) using load bars that mount to the top of the FrontRunner rack. I’ve also considered using the cargo bags but I’ve heard that none are truly waterproof and they’re not as aerodynamic as a box.

I’m wondering if anyone else has had a similar dilemma or set up and what they prefer. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have a Yakima Skybox I run on the Frontrunner 3/4. I don’t know how many thousand miles i’ve used it on our trips with no issues.

Pics on post #90 and lots of pics on the following page of my thread.
