Help needed with Super White paint for 2014

Hi there,

I was hit by a truck a few weeks ago. I need a new front panel. The issue I am having is the paint. So everything I read on here, the Taco and Tundra forums all say the Super White is a single stage paint (clear coat is mixed in). People have said they have letters and emails from Toyota stating the fact. I have someone from a Tundra forum saying in 2015 they changed the formulation as there were so many complaints so it's not single stage any more.

I am not changing bodyshops, this is the second one I am at and he is willing to do what is needed but he doesn't think it can be single stage, he called the Toyota Palo Alto stealership and they told him it is not single stage and it does have clear coat on top.

I am losing my frickin mind at this point. I have emailed Toyota USA with this question but not heard back yet.

I am not one to keep the truck shiny and clean but I will never sell this vehicle and 5-10 years from now if there is no clear coat but the replacement panel is clear coated I have a feeling they will look different and that will be a dripping tap for me.

Does anyone have any documentation from Toyota on exactly what the 2014 was painted with beyond 0040 which is on the door frame?.

I would greatly appreciate your help.
Cheers

Any bodyshop worth going to should be able to tell if your car is clear coated.

No question. It's single stage. Find a Toyota Factory Certified shop. They'll both know it's single stage and be honest with you that they will not repair it with single stage. They will repair with base/clear. Toyota has pretty specific rules for its certified shops in how they repair them and where they are allowed to blend so that it's an invisible repair for life. On the plus side - white is the easiest color to match/blend.

Jetboy is right on the money with his reply. Be thankful you have Super White rather than the Blizzard Pearl like mine. Talk about a pain to match!!!!

Ok, I'm going to shut down all of this Single Stage Vs Clearcoat for repairs myth on Super White.

TOYOTA THEMSELVES AND EVERY PAINT MANUFACTURER ACKNOWLEDGES PAINT CODE "040 - SUPER WHITE" IS A SINGLE STAGE PAINT FROM TOYOTA.

While this may have changed in 2015 ( I can't verify that right now) - Every paint manufacturer recommends Clear Coat paint for repairs on 040. I have been in the collision repair industry since 2002, and every single 040 Super White Toyota I have fixed, from Camry's to 4Runners to Tacoma's and Corolla's has been repaired using Clearcoat Paint. A Toyota Certified Body shop honestly mean JACK. I have personally seen work from the local "Certified" Toyota body shop attached to the dealer, and it was sub-par at best, and criminal at worst. Straight up missed damages and poor repair/paint work.

Find a shop and ask to see something they JUST PAINTED, before it gets buffed. A real shop will barely have to buff anything. I worked at a Ford Dealer for 2 years, and my Head Painter did all of the buffing, except he never had to buff anything. Buffing just hides poor paint work, and removes clearcoat that protects the paint.

I will say that Toyota OEM parts are far superior to any aftermarket parts out there for body repairs. But don't fall for the "Toyota Certified" body shop BS, find a clean shop, with a good painter.

At the risk of going a bit off-topic here, there is one situation where it is always wise to go with the dealer's bodyshop - regardless of quality - is when the car is a lease.

One little known advantage of leases is that accidents don't reduce the value of your trade if it was properly repaired. If you use the dealer's bodyshop, then they can't complain about the quality of the repair.

When my sister had her RL lease, she was at the dealer one day for a service and had a scrape on her bumper. The dealer said "we can fix that for $300" and she said OK. The repair was so-so and on lease turn they said "we'll have to charge you for that less than perfect repair". She pulled out her receipt from them and they said "Oh, I guess that is fine then."

More misinformation. If you take the car to a shop with a lifetime warranty, it means just that, lifetime warranty. I have fixed 1 or 2 cars on warranty at my shop where the lease company found problems with our repairs. I've got Audi/Lexus/Benz dealers telling people they have to get their body repairs done at the dealer since it's a lease, and it's a flat out lie. I understand your point, but it's as simple as exercising the warranty on the repairs. I've had the dealer who took the lease turn-in bring the vehicle back because they were going to charge for poor repairs. I just redid the job and sent it right back with no issues for the customer.
