highlander gets routinely re-design, why not 4Runner
highlander gets routinely re-design every 6-7 years with lots of electronic bell and whistles, why does it take so long for 4Runner to get re-design? and add some electronic bell and whistles, such as TSS (Toyota Safety Sense), BSM with RCTA, ICS with RCTB, ...

Why is the 4R more reliable than the Highlander? Maybe because the changes are far and few between.

The Highlander is an appliance...the 4Runner is a body on frame off-road vehicle build for a specific purpose and reliability.
Appliances need constant updating and re-designing to appeal to their potential buyers as there are many competitors in that market segment and buyers in general only buy based on features offered.

Having just bought a 2019, I'm good with another 10 years of this body style.
Can't stand car companies that have to change headlight styles every year.

There isn't almost any competition left to the 4Runner.
Maybe the Wrangler, Tacoma, Colorado, and Ranger.
One is a bathtub SUV with live axles and the other 3 are drastically different mid-sized trucks.

The highlander appeals to a certain sect of folks the 4 runner does not. The 4 runner is not for everybody but there is a ton on the road. I bought one for the durability, I hope it runs til the wheels fall off. Just don't see the highlander doing that.

Toyota just wants to milk all the money out of the 5th gen it can. The tooling has since been paid. Several years ago the 4runner was rumored to go away. Then SUVs of all types became hot items. Until recently 4runners were never advertised. Now they are in TV ads all the time. Sales picked up with lower gas prices so Toyota decided to just keep building them until they are no longer profitable. It is still up in the air if there will be a 6th gen. I love mine but it is a dinosaur.

The next gen 4Runner will not look as good as the latest 5th gen.

I think this is a good thing for us. It means more after market parts, for one thing. Also better resale value.

Technically, yes, since the platform it's riding on first came out with the 2003 4Th gen. It's a 16 year old platform.
