And I thought this was going to be about someone getting their oil changed and receiving a vehicle back with no oil in the engine.

I use the local Jiffy Lube for vehicle inspection only. Watching the activity there, it appears it might be hard for a thief to get away with what's reported in the OP.

Regardless of what you came for, you have to pay before your keys are returned to you.

I suppose a thief could pay for someone else's oil change while they're engulfed in the free popcorn and magazine selection, but how many would try that?

Well the way I look at it is either the dealership mechanics destroy your vehicle after doing a test drive or they give it to a thief. Either way it's a crap shoot.

I've had the first one happen to me. The second one won't happen because I refuse to let anyone work on my cars after that lol

I paid a shop to change my oil for the first time EVER in September 2017 when I was given a company truck. I brought it to a Mobil 1 shop that just has you sit in the vehicle while they service your vehicle. First thing I notice is that they got their greasy hands all over the fender and the hood. I start running errands around town and when I got out of the truck I noticed that the rather large undercarriage heat shield has been dragging under the truck for miles. I re-attach it and go on my way. A few weeks later an unknown hose in the same area came loose but it didn't affect how the truck was running and I couldn't figure out where it was supposed to go so I jammed it back up in there (I thought it might have been a water drain hose). Days later the truck stalls out and dies on the side of the road. I brought it to the dealer and they said it was a clogged fuel solenoid which was related to the detached hose. The hose being something that doesn't just detach on its own, somebody had to mess with it.

First time (and it will be the last) I ever paid for an oil change on a personal vehicle, I brought my Fiesta ST in for a checkup and oil change at the Ford dealership since my warranty was just about to expire. The technician did everything as expected but he used conventional oil instead of full synthetic LIKE THE MANUAL RECOMMENDS

I still have to bring in the company truck for oil changes. It always makes me nervous when I pull in and see that the employee parking is filled with beat to shit Honda Civics with aftermarket rims

I tried trusting the dealership with my 2 years service, hell I even brought the Lexus once since it was convenient.
On my runner they at least changed the filter. However they managed to break off my skidplate bolts in the vehicle.
On the Lexus, it had the oil changed at the Lexus dealer once and at my Toyota dealer once. Neither of those ever touched the filter. That's my assumption because there was no indication of any oil outside the cannister or they were able to immaculately remove any oil residue.

Neither vehicle goes to the dealership any more.

From what I hear from my peers who work at dealerships, that statement holds true.

I was told many of their hires for lube techs are people who are trying to move up from jobs just like that. It’s an entry level position for someone at a dealer, and they most certainly won’t have a more experienced, or higher paid techs preform this type of work as the dealer would just lose money.

That said, I still think it’s a lot less likely you would experience an issue at a dealer vs one of those cut-rate lube quick lube stops. I do feel dealers operate at a higher standard and really don’t want fraud or problems from bad workers, where these shady lube stops may even train staff to be deceptive or misleading.
