I am admittedly influenced by my own anecdotal experience with FCA. Mostly fleet vehicles (Ram, Dakota, Durango, sedans). We only had one Jeep (older Cherokee) in the fleet. I know there are plenty of stories like yours, but I don't trust them.

She's constantly on about it and won't believe anyone that it's just a different type of transmission. She's had Hyundai engineers look at it, replace pumps, do software updates, etc. I have stopped suggesting that it may actually be fine and that it's just how the product is made. Now I just support her in her DCT vendetta.

We absolutely hate our Tucson. It feels like its going to die whenever you have to make a slow turn from a stop or drive slowly up a hill. It's a horrid implementation of a DCT. I can't wait to get ride of it.
If it's fine and that's how its made - then that's enough confirmation for me to never own another Korean car again.

The 4.0 is an un killable engine. They are known for 400K plus It's the transmissions in the Jeeps that are the downfall. 150K or so and it's time for a rebuild. I'm a huge Jeep fan, I have owned many and I miss my 98 Grand Cherokee 5.9L Limited. I do love my 4Runner though and have no regrets.

I escaped any transmission rebuilds in my WJ. I did replace the driveshaft that runs front to rear as I had Quadratrac II on the Jeep. Still not a bad run for a Jeep.

I drove an XJ for a while too. Same 4.0 and a pretty basic vehicle. Still sometimes wish I still had a Jeep. The XJ was pretty peppy with the 4.0L too. They don't weigh much.

I understand where it comes from. My brother and close friends both had 1st generation Durango's that shit the bed early and another acquaintance that worked for Chrysler even admits there are plenty of models to avoid. He's been a HUGE help troubleshooting electrical issue...

In fact, I'm perplexed by all the hate for Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge/Ram products. We've had 1 Chrysler, 2 Dodge (Ram) trucks, and 3 Jeeps - none of them ever gave us any problems. Actually, the only "bad" car we ever had was a 99 Grand Prix GTP. Engine and trans were solid, the rest of the car had a bunch of constant, dumb, irritating problems. Dumped it before factory warranty expired.
Anyway, back to topic. If I woke up tomorrow and all 4Runners had mysteriously disappeared from Earth, I'd probably look at the Volvo XC 90 T6. From what I've read and what I've seen (never rode in or drove one), they look like they'd be about as comfortable of a long distance highway cruiser as you can get. Cost a bit more than a 4R though...

I hate that. My wife and I were talking about it last night and she still has nothing but disdain for that car. It just doesn't bother me for some reason. I know how it is and accept it. She wants one of the new Rav 4s in that Lava Orange color now so I'm not sure how much longer this one will be with us.

I'm with ya there. If my wife wanted a lava orange car, I'm not sure how much longer she would be with me either.

I haven't but it's her call. I get my cars and the occasional car part or new gun. She gets her car and the occasional camera lens or electronic bauble. If it were my call she'd have been driving that hybrid sonata because mom mobiling crossovers just seems like a waste of gas to me.
