Checking back in on this topic... yeah, there is a part of me that’s considering trying to find a really low mile LC when we ditch the LR Disco... but those are like unicorns most of the time.

For everyones amusement... here are text exchanges from this morning... (for my wife’s 2018 LR Discovery)

Wife: Radio/computer screen isn’t working this morning...
Me: ...at ALL?... or just some of the buttons?
Wife: At all.
Wife: Kids were disappointed on the way to school, and said “well, looks like it’s about time to take it back in to shop again mom.” (Ages 6 and 8)
Me: Whelp... try turning the truck off for a few mins, restart and see if it reboots...
Wife: Tried that... didn’t work. I’ll just see how the day goes..
Me: I’m starting to get used to British engineering...
Wife: Not funny.
Me: Sorry. Keep me posted...

We recently picked up a 2019 Highlander AWD and love everything about it. Even threw some Falken Wildpeak AT3W tires under it the week we bought it. Went 2 sizes larger than the stock street tires that came on it. Much better ride and much more aggressive look.

I think these are so good looking. Just a ton better than the unnecessarily angular design language of the Rav. I feel like this will look good for a long time.

@mybabydaddy , thank you for the very relevant insight.
Glad the 4runner still holds a candle to that type of vehicle class in some respects.

If 4runners were no longer possible to own, I think I'd try some variant of a manual Volvo wagon, maybe an Outback 3.6r.
If I have a dedicated people mover, I might try an older Subaru STI hatchback or a Tesla Model X/Y if I could afford such.

Wife currently drives a 19' Chevy Equinox with the 2.0 turbo.
Prior to that we've had a 13' Equinox for 5 years, a 17 Traverse for 1.5 years and I still have my 98 GMC truck 4wd reg cab longed with 202k miles.
I should probably write a comparison between the GM stuff and my new to me 2010 sr5.

Wife loves driving the equinox and loves riding but not driving the t4r

There is no comparison between GM vehicles and Toyota vehicles. I don't think I would ever buy another American car. Hotrod yes, but nothing made today.

No kidding a car from the 60s is not as safe as today's cars, not the point and a useless study. Apples to oranges there. Take a 60s GM car and put it up against a 60s Toyota in a crash test and the GM car will destroy the Toyota. The point is, American cars TODAY are not built well at all mechanically. 100k-150k if that. We bought a 2019 Highlander in June to replace a 2007 Sportage 2.7 AWD that gave us 12 years of very reliable service. It was just time for something newer and safer with some gadgets. My wife was dead set on the Acadia until we started doing some homework on it. Didn't even bother going to test drive it, it wasn't happening. Imports are far superior in quality, there is no arguing that.

I was not really arguing about import vs. domestic quality..............just that an old hotrod may not be the safest around......see Kevin Hart's accident.

Ah I agree 100% there. Now if you build the car right, it's safer than the safest of current cars on the market. I know that's a strong statement and generally people are not building cars to this extent but take a stock car for example. Take a 7-8 second street strip drag car for example. The cages in those cars hold up when crashed at 300 MPH and the driver walks away. Imagine every day street cars were built with that technology.

I would buy an older generation pathfinder and pimp it the hell out. Or an older suburban.

Everyday cars aren't built with cages because on the street they can be dangerous. You really need a 5-point harness (and probably a helmet) if you have a cage. You really don't want to hit your head against a metal bar in a crash.

Correct however they can be integrated into the structure. Check out the smart car. As ugly and ridiculous as it is, the cabin is insanely reinforced. It can be done, it just isn't likely to keep cars at a certain price point and to keep weight down to meet EPA standards.
