Our Grand Cherokee is a '98 which was the last year of the first generation (ZJ). It has the 5.2 liter V8 (318 CID), the basic design of which dates back to the 1960's. So they probably had the bugs pretty well worked out by then. I recall the early years of the next generation (WJ) having more problems.
Back to the thread's topic, as long as I continue to need the off-road capabilities of the 4Runner, I'd probably look to the Wrangler (overpriced as it may be) or the new Bronco. If I didn't need the off-road capabilities, I'd probably go for an Audi SQ5.
