2019 damage / repair question

I wasn't sure where to post this so I thought I'd start here. Today our 4 month old 2019 Nightshade was hit by a neighbor pulling out of his driveway.

We were driving at about 40mph down the main road and he pulled right into the side of us. 99% of the impact was taken directly by the rear passenger wheel. It took about 20 minutes to go flat and the rim is somewhat trashed but I wanted to get opinions on other damage that might be there. I'm not sure the adjuster can do a proper estimate given that the only physical damage is to the wheel and a tiny bit on the rear qtr panel. I'm sure there is a lot more that could be going beyond the wheel.

I'd also be interested in any thoughts/experience with diminished value (CO is a diminished value state) and how to deal with insurance (we both have AllState).

Thanks in advance!!!

The adjuster can only write what he sees, the body shop will find everything that was damaged (if there's more) when they put the truck up on the frame rack. Being it was hit on the wheel, the body shop will probably check the truck's tracking via a 4 wheel alignment. If there's anything out of wack or any other work needs to be done, the shop will put in a supplement claim to what the adjuster wrote.

I was hit in the rear wheel. Minimal damage to the read driver door skin. Rear tire was destroyed.

Late in the repair process, they discovered that it couldn't be aligned properly. I needed a new rear axle housing, which took some time to receive.

I was surprised that the axle housing bent, but really glad they caught it and replaced it instead of a squirrly alignment. It's been 4 years and a lot of miles offroad and onroad, with no issues.

It sure sucks having your new vehicle in a collision. I feel your pain.

I wanted to follow-up and close this out.

Luckily there was very minimal damage, wheel, tire, and some scratches (the dealer said the wheel was still useable so very little energy into the rear axel, it had the worst of the scratches so it was replaced) .... given Toyota's pricing the deep scratches on the molding were pretty expensive in my opinion but at least I didn't have any issues with the other drivers insurance. For the diminished value, I went and got a quote on trading it in on a new 4Runner, I sent that to their insurance and they met my 1/2 way on what I was asking for (~10% of trade in vs the 15% I asked for). I thought that was fair and I wasn't going to argue with them to try and get a few hundred more. For anyone searching, diminished value is a real thing and you can recover $, but having a quote to back up your claim will be very helpful. The fact that it was an 8 month old 2019 was also a big help. PM me if you want more details.

I took it to the dealer first since I was concerned about mechanical damage, once that was settled I went to the body shop.

My wife was was lightly rear-ended in her Audi A4 a few years back. The damage was minimal. The repair consisted entirely of replacing and painting the bumper cover. There was no sheet metal, structural, or other damage whatsoever. When we went to trade it on a new one last year, the dealership (the same one where we'd bought it and also did the repair) informed us that the Carfax report indicated that the car had been involved in a rear-end accident. They lowered their original trade-in offer by a substantial amount as a result, saying that they'd have to disclose that the car had been in an accident to any potential buyer. Since the Carfax report gave no indication of the severity of the damage, potential buyers would probably assume the worst and they would have to discount it accordingly.

I wasn't aware of the Colorado "diminished value" rules, and since the damage was so minimal, didn't give it much thought at the time of the accident. Anyway, you may want to bring up this potential issue with the insurance company.

Make sure to claim your diminished value from your neighbor's insurance company.

I made the mistake of not doing this on a 2010 RX350 a while back and regretted it. I had some frame damage that was repaired and it showed up on the Carfax when I traded in the car later on. Live and learn.
