Toll Bill for a truck I traded in 3 years ago

So I traded in my truck 3 years ago and this month I get a toll bill for that license plate. I thought it was odd giving the fact that I traded in the truck signed over the release of interest and paid off the loan. I called the dealership and they told me I should of took the plates off and said I should fill out a bill of sale and dispute the toll. What the heck? I thought that is there job? Haha. Can I call the non emergency hotline and report the plates stolen? It makes no sense to me.
Thanks Guys!

Just guessing here but from your post it seems they used the license tag and not a toll tag - which is registered to your name. What is the state law where you live regaring removing plates. I think in Texas the plates go with the vehicle unless they are custom. Take you bill of sale and tell them you don't own it. This seems odd that you traded it and they sold it with the plates but didn't register it for the new owner. Did you get any bills for the license tags in past 3 years?

It’s an option in Texas to keep your plates or let them go with the vehicle.
I just did this with a vehicle for my mother. Since the vehicle came from a trusted family member she opted to keep the plates it had.
