That sucks..I'm not familiar with all the other toytec issues, but this looks like a case of metal fatigue..if that is a welded area I'd say it's a pretty sh**ty design and I could be wrong, but it seems to me like that's a single piece of molded steel..

is this a widespread issue?

Get their Aluma series one if you do, they're made by Elka. I would avoid their regular boss kits.

BTW you you seem to forget this:
"im not picking sides in that thread, but the OP clearly states he installed them wrong. what do you expect?"
I've sold old, modded cars. I've always told the buyer they're AS IS and that it'd be a good idea to get an inspection by a 4x4 shop of their choice when buying a modded vehicle and I'm not going to promise that any of the lift components aren't going to grenade within a month.

I take care of my stuff but shit happens. I almost sold my 13 TE before overhauling my suspension lift and it looked OK but had blown CV axles, frozen LCAs, and blown shocks. Would I feel bad for the buyer if they had to replace it or if it failed?

No.

Did the component break when he was driving his blind, deaf grandmother to church on Sunday, or did it break when he was doing a BJ Baldwin impression? Would he honestly tell me? Would he want money from me from an "as is" sale that I'm in every right by most state laws to offer no warranty or presumed condition of the vehicle.

Interesting case.

Either way, I was happy when I pulled all the Toytec shit off my truck and replaced it with Icons.

So the Toytec Boss shocks work fine while you own the vehicle (you said you didn't baby it but you didn't tell us how long the shocks were on there), then 1 month after you sell it one fails and it's the shocks fault not the driver because he is "nice"? I am sure this "nice" guy drives like an old lady and wasn't hauling ass over the speed bump so it has to be the shocks fault....

The OP did leave out one very important detail, How old where they? How many miles were in them? Seems funny, that he forgot to mention that but yet it's the shocks fault its toytec fault lol

My suspicion is someone was driving too hard over an obstacle and caused a crack or fault and then going over the speed bump displaced the fracture and you have something that looks awful

Someone previously had mentioned that it was installed wrong. Can anyone clarify or expand upon this

I'm not an expert, but if you don't have the correct bump stops you may bottom out the shock rather than the bump stops taking the hit. That will either slowly damage the shock or break it immediately depending on how hard the hit is.

I am sure a nice guying driving over a "rolling speed bump" at 75 mph with no bump stops on shocks that are 15 years old and have been on 100's of 4x4 roads won't help any, even a King may have failed. Never trust a Craig's List ad that says a 4x4 has never been off-road and is in perfect condition. But it's all Toytec's fault.

Apparently, this was just after crossing one of those rolling speed bumps. Now, we didnít baby the car, but we treated it well as it was my daily driver with the little kids along as well.

So... if you have lifted your 4Runner, particularly with ToyTec BOSS shocks, please make sure to check these welds. (Or, replace them with a better designed shock without that failure point...) Imagine if he had hit a pothole on the freeway instead when this happened. Iím currently waiting on ToyTec to respond if they will help this guy out...
Please tell us, How old are the shocks? How many miles on them?

Looks like these things tend to happen on rigs with excessive lifts. Any spacers on top, by chance?

I am not a fan of re-branded stuff, and driving fast through rough terrain is why people upgrade the suspension, but Toytec should not be blamed until it is clear that the component has been used within specs.

And what is that, just a 5100? If so, it is not for driving fast over rough terrain anyway. Then, again, speed bumps are not rough terrain, lol.
