Based on the picture they had some age, that said, a failure like that seems odd, especially if they were on for awhile. They sell tons of those coilovers and the failure rate doesn’t seem any higher than other brands.
My own experience is I’m about to replace my Boss coilovers after 100k miles and no babying them. I off-road them hard when I’m out. Probably have carried too much weight at times as well. I’m going with Elka because I got in on a group buy and got the adjustable compression version with remote resi.
