EPA wants to ban our mods

Any one heard of this crap? Posted by Gadget at URD:
It is our belief that businesses should stay out of politics unless it directly affects the business and industry.

This is a case where it does. The EPA is trying to shut down the automotive aftermarket and destroy a viable industry that employs a vast number of people. Please consider signing this petition to save the industry and preserve your right to modify your vehicles and race cars.

https://view.message.sema.org/?qs=76...c3b544a93030af

Edit: Due to popular demand I did a 2 minute google search for another source so we can have some braille on the situation.

Petition * U.S. House of Representatives: Prevent the EPA from Banning Vehicle Modification! * Change.org

Not enough detail to blindly sign a petition. References to the proposed legislation?

I read through the EPA press releases and enforcement actions after your SEMA reference and didn’t see anything specific about what SEMA was describing. That said, there were a lot of enforcement actions in 2019 against a lot of manufacturers, especially those doing diesel mods that bypass DPF and other emissions equipment. I can see both sides of the argument.

The problem, in my opinion, isn’t that EPA is trying to take away your ability to create purpose-built rigs. The problem is that there are too many people circumventing the system. “I don’t care what the law says, I’m going to take XYZ off of my vehicle, roll coal because I love dumping black smoke into the convertible beside me at the traffic light” kind of garbage. If you’re a street racer, and you’re driving on the city streets, not the local race track, then you’re not a purpose-built race vehicle. You’re just another jerk on the street flipping off the man making it harder on the folks who are legitimately building purpose-built race machines. This, of course, in the spirit that I’m sure this post was intended.

I appreciate that SEMA is working to ensure that folks who want to race, regardless of where and how, have an opportunity to do that. But we have to do our part as well to ensure the ability to do so is maintained. Otherwise we’re shooting ourselves in the foot.

My mom and her friends annoy me when they parrot what someone on the news says. They begin ranting ignorantly without understanding the real reason for the policy.

I agree that laws and enforcement for the situations you described are needed. But leave it at the state level like it has been. Why do the feds need to be involved? Washington has a way of lumping a broad description of infractions into these type of laws. As well as the risk of riders on these bills that get passed, that could create problems for us all, in ways we can't imagine right now. I would love to see the state's enforce against bubba diesel blowing smoke into every Prius he comes across. But, I doubt that problem exists as bad in say NJ, compared to Fl where I live. Our inspections have been gone for years and it shows. There's a million beater cars with defective cats polluting way more than the race/drift/off-road vehicles these type of laws will go after.

The Federal government has set the standards and those standards are enforced by the states. States can - and do - decide what to enforce, but the standards still stand. A state cannot say "this doesn't apply in our state" but they can say "we won't check for that".

Emissions don't stop at state borders.

In addition, this "petition" makes zero sense for this community.

The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) have been interpreted to say that if a part can be installed on a street legal car, then that part needs to meet all of the standards.

Y'all have to remember that SEMA is an industry lobby group and doesn't have anything to do with our interests.

Most of the posts I see now are "what is this switch for?" or "can I put 275s on without rubbing?", and the understandable diagnostic questions asked.
But this community was built on aftermarket industry modifications. Aftermarket (SEMA) companies help pay the bills on this site. This petition makes perfect sense to me because I have a modified truck, enough to where if some of these laws get passed it could cost me quite a few bucks to comply for something that has nothing to do with emissions, which to my point, Washington tends to lump a lot of other crap into these bills by way of all the riders they attach.

Years ago offshore drilling almost happened off the east coast of Florida, and you guessed it, by attaching a rider to a bill that had nothing at all to do with drilling. Sorry I don't trust Washington.

What i know. We have a bunch of diesel trucks at our company. The current administration is actually fighting the cafe standards and want to roll back the Obama adminstration standards. Infact the administration is suing California for setting it's own standards. Diesel emissions equipment in trucks cause a lot of issues in those trucks. There are a lot of aftermarket delete kits which the epa is targeting. One way you can circumvent that is to buy a farm and register your truck as a farm truck or commercial truck for a business.
