Technical Question: Upgrading OEM Coils, Keeping Stock Shocks
Hey guys,
Former Tacoma owner here so I'm a little unfamiliar with modding the rear of the 4runner. I just ordered a set of ICON 2" rear coils and I hear a bunch of people claim its alright to run a 2 inch spacer with stock shocks.
So my question is this: From an offroad/suspension geometry perspective, what am I risking by sticking with factory shocks for the time being? Am I losing flex? Am I risking blowing the stock shocks with the increase ride height?
Thanks in advance!

Hey there, just to make sure Im understanding you, you plan to put in 2in icon coils in the rear and a spacer puck in the front? If so, shouldn't be a problem but if you're looking for more flex/travel, you'd need to go with a different set up. If just looking for height/stance, you should be fine.

that the OE rear shocks aren't intended to be used with a lift spring. A spacer would work fine until you can get a lift goin.

But will it work? Whats the difference between using a lift spring and a 2 inch spacer like many guys do?

I've got Fox 2.0 coilovers in the front now, but I'm stock in the rear. I was hoping to use a lift coil spring in the rear in lieu of a spacer with the stock OEM shocks for the time being.
I wanted to make sure that was safe first.

I believe member MAST4R was running stock shocks (rear) with lifted coils and had no issues. Could be wrong though, so check with him for sure!

Thank you sir! I will swap them eventually, but I only have like 11k on the stock suspension and I was hoping to save for a while before I drop another couple hundred bucks.

Hey so just and update. I read a bunch of MAST4R's posts but couldn't decipher whether or not he ran stock shocks with aftermarket lift coils. I chickened out and ordered some 1-3 inch fox 2.0 IFP shocks to match the front. Who needs savings anyway?
