Portable Freezer/Fridge for COVID19
Hi Gang,
As we hunker down for covid19, I had a question. Can we use our portable freezer/fridges for long term use in the home, say for extra freezer space? Planning to keep it working continuously for a few weeks to a few months. I have a Dometic75cfx dz. I reached out to Dometic, but no word yet.

Go to Home Depot and buy a chest freezer 15 cubic feet or more. Check Consumer Reports for the brands that are reccommended. You should have already had one if you have a family and want to keep your food bill under control by buying in bulk.
If you dont have a generator you will need one of those too. Get one that has an oil pump and a filter. Better yet get one that is diesel and has a decent sized fuel tank. Nothing Chinese.

People living in vans and RV's run them year round without problems. So I don't see why not.

Yes, you can run them fulltime. They shut on and off as they need them.
A few blocks from me over the weekend, there was a 5 block power issue and all the buildings lost power for anywhere from 5 to 12 hours. Everyone was pissed because their fridges and freezers are all fully stocked and they didn't want the food to go bad.
With a solar panel, a car battery, and a portable fridge, you can run it fulltime pretty much. These are great to have as a backup.

I just got the cheapest at the size I wanted from Home Depot.
It sits outside so no need nothing expensive. I dont know how people live without a chest freezer.

Me either. A chest freezer was on of the first things I got when I bought my first house years ago.
As you can see the power consumption is really low on these new ones. $36/yr projected energy cost is crazy cheap.
The new freezer has been sitting at -10°F all night now so it ready to transfer the food into it. Ill decide what to do with the old one soon.

Portable Freezer/Fridge for COVID19
I used a ARB 50qt in my restaurant to store frozen fries and ran it everyday 7 days a week for years with no problems.
Far back corner you can see it.

I doubt it is NSF rated, my health inspector passed it though. Also NSF rated equipment requirements differ in local health county regulations. It was the only freezer that would fit the space.

My ARB 50qt has been on since about this time last year. I did replace the vehicle battery once so I guess the frig got to rest for an hour or so.

I would suggest getting a chest freezer. I actually picked one up before the pandemic (Arctic King) and it's sitting in my garage right now and I haven't had an issue with it yet. I will say if you want it to last long, you do need to thaw it out once a year to keep the frost down.
I had mine shipped to my house because I found a deal online, but I've read people having issues with the condition of the freezer when it's shipped. It's just me and my wife so it holds plenty for us. We have a separate temp gauge in there and we've never seen any fluctuation in temperature.
