One thing that helped me was documenting everything thoroughly. I took detailed photos of my mods and kept a folder with all receipts and installation details. When I had to file a claim, having that evidence really helped argue for the value of my custom upgrades.

It might also be worth looking into “agreed value” policies if you haven’t already. Some insurance companies offer this option, where you and the insurer agree on the value of your vehicle beforehand, including any modifications.

Also, keep in mind that having a good plan for other types of coverage, like life insurance, can also provide peace of mind and help with overall financial planning. If you need more specific advice, consulting with an insurance expert who understands custom vehicles might be beneficial.

Being a retired Body Shop Mgr. for over 35 years I have seen pretty much it all when it comes to insurance companies trying to settle claims with customers over total losses. This happens mostly with customers that have low mileage vehicles and in very nice condition, most purchase this vehicle new and when it comes to replacement their values are pretty high for their vehicle. I would say most with this type of vehicle are unhappy with their insurance settlement, as they in no way can find a replacement like the vehicle they had. If you feel your vehicle is worth more than the average vehicle of the same type, I would be talking to my insurance agent and see what is available to you to protect your investment.
