It's a growing trend - more electronics and less mechanical. It's cheaper and easier to modify/service from the manufacturing perspective.
This started with Land Rover years ago and the disease has spread.
They just program the TRD model differently (or enable) from the standard model and add a knob. This is true even with the 4runner TRD Pro (aside from e-locker) all the traction stuff is just applications of the ABS system. There is no reason that the Limited can't have crawl control and MTS, it's an ECU function.
I suspect that Toyota will settle on a few models to have real 4wd. The rest will use electronic wizardry.
