I guess if one day they're gonna make us quit driving BOF frame vehicles by any manufacturer, this is a good thing. If the AWD systems are good enough to actually make an A/T tire usable, then it will sell. The problem with these systems right now is they probably wouldn't react well to tires that are more than one size larger. But it is encouraging.....

Traded in our 5 speed manual 2017 Jetta Se 1.4T for one a few weeks ago.
It's fun to drive. Acceleration is pretty good and it really handles the curves here in the Ozarks.

I'll be adding a light bar and a trailer hitch (rear recovery point) but am not allowed to lift it. For now at least...

True it is encouraging to see awd vehicles handling so offroading that most 4 runners have yet to experience. Unfortunately when the terrain gets actually bad no awd crossover will be able to handle big tires and stress that big rocks will be put on those weak diffs. Without a low range the transmission will probably overheat and break. Fortunately I think Toyota will continue to make real 4wd systems in the 4 runner

It's a growing trend - more electronics and less mechanical. It's cheaper and easier to modify/service from the manufacturing perspective.

This started with Land Rover years ago and the disease has spread.

They just program the TRD model differently (or enable) from the standard model and add a knob. This is true even with the 4runner TRD Pro (aside from e-locker) all the traction stuff is just applications of the ABS system. There is no reason that the Limited can't have crawl control and MTS, it's an ECU function.

I suspect that Toyota will settle on a few models to have real 4wd. The rest will use electronic wizardry.

I'm choosing the Toyota all day, but it was a nice little read indeed. I have a 2001 rav4 and I love how easy it is to find cheap parts for it. I think it has lived its life, but as long as it's still going I won't be the one to put it down. I had a few problems last year with the gas consumption cause it skyrocketed, and there were no fissured pumps or pipes and I was super upset thinking the engine was just giving up. Fortunately, it was just the ECM and it was pretty easy to find a toyota rav4 ecm repair which was of nice quality as well. Don't think my bank account would have survived so easily if it was another car.
