Why do I suck with a grease gun?

I like to do the basic tinkering with my truck - oil changes, diffs, xfer case, driveline grease etc. I'm not a great wrencher however when it comes to the heavy duty work that so many people on this site are good at.

With that in mind, what the hell am I doing wrong when I use a grease gun? I'm using the red and tacky for my UCAs/ball joints (these JBA UCAs - I like them for the truck, but that ball joint goes dry very quickly) and that stuff leaks out of every seal, orifice, valve, whatever on the gun and gets everywhere. I've tried two different brands of grease gun and it's the same problem.

I don't seem to have the issue quite as badly when I do the 6 points on the drive shaft. Is it the different grease? Me?

Dammit!

It's a messy job. I bring extra rags under the truck with me. It's not just you.... everyone has a bad day with a grease gun from time to time.

But-- I bought a lock n lube coupler a couple years ago, and it's been a game changer. I bought the XL one, but I wish I had gotten the shorter one for my UCA zerks.

Prior to that I had a grease gun coupler stuck on a Ujoint for the better part of an hour, and I was losing my mind.

check out the Lock n lube:

I vote for the lock and lube. It made the job of greasing fittings so simple it’s not funny.

So the thumb release allows it just fall off the zerk, basically? Can you use the thumb release to put it on the zerk? These are my biggest issues - first I can't get the coupler to click onto the zerk, then once it's on the damn thing won't let go! I started to think maybe I was just too stupid to figure it out...

I cannot tell you how frustrating it was when I greased my fittings a few months ago.

Thanks to @nb rob for the product link.

FYI: I reached out to the company to inquire about a GB so stay tuned.

They have never heard of a GB, but I explained the basics so let's see how it goes.

that's exactly it. when you press the thumb button, 4 jaws extend. You put them on the zerk, and release. The sleeve slides down and it won't come off. releases very easily.

rebuildable too.

It sure takes the dread out of greasing fittings

Heard back from the LockNLube company and they have interest in participating in a GB for their products.

Still waiting on another reply from them but it's looking good for LockNLube GB.

If this comes to fruition, my next post on this will be in the GB section.

It might not be your fault. It could be the nipples are rusted shut.

Once when I was living in The Philippines, I had a Toyota and I took it to a lube shop. I watched as the guy ruined his grease gun trying to push grease into the fitting. Many of them were totally rusted shut.

When greasing the UCA, how far to you loosen the long bolt before adding grease ?

Grease guns were designed by Satan - it seems.

Sorry to report this folks, but LockNLube has no interest in participating in a T4R GB so we're on our own.
