Whether installing yourself or not, you’re still dependent on aftermarket vendors for parts. I am sure there are a few of folks (you maybe?) here that can manufacture a part in their garage...but for 99% of folks, you rely on vendors.

In the end it's all the same thing. 4Runners are "built" over time with aftermarket parts because Toyota simply does not have an off-road enthusiast division. They don't really sell a complete package like Jeep, Ford, or Chevy from the showroom floor. However it's all just a bunch of bolt-on parts. So whether I get it installed by a shop or do it myself the end product are bolt on parts. I've done a lot of the work myself on my 4Runner and while it was a good experience, I gained knowledge from the process, and know how to fix things in the field if they do go wrong sometimes I wish there was an easy button for certain things and that the 4R came built from the factory floor.

Whatever my next vehicle is, and 99% will be a Toyota, if they came out with a 6th gen 4R with a "sasquatch" package I'd probably get it. The mods wouldn't stop but I wish the 4Runner had some legit OEM off-road parts and features that I could get from the factory and wouldn't need to rely on aftermarket parts. I actually like the approach Chevy did with AEV and I think the ZR2 Bison is the perfect example of an OEM+ style. Imagine if Toyota partnered with say ARB for their next Land Cruiser or 4Runner and came up with specifically engineered products and created an a la carte menu that you could just simply buy from day one. This isn't too different than what they do in Australia where you can simply buy and add ARB products right from the dealer.

They put a $100 deposit on one and now they are "building it!"

This is for the Bronco Sport, and no driving was allowed, but here are plenty of shots inside and outside. Some of it looks really impressive.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTFLAzDOo18

One thing I wish they answered more clearly is if it's front wheel drive based. They just kind of gave it an ehhhhhh answer. If it is front wheel drive based, then it looks like the all wheel drive would be set up like the non-Wrangler/Gladiator/Grand Cherokee Jeeps in their higher trims.

The Bronco sport is based on the Escape I believe. In that case it would be FWD based unibody crossover

Nope. That is the design of the current production Ranger. I went to the Ford dealer today to check it out and took some pictures. I can feel fairly certain that the Bronco will have a near identical suspension setup.

Also, Option pricing was released yesterday for the Bronco. The V6 will cost $3,500 and the Sasquatch package (35" tires, 4.7 gears, revised shocks) is $5,000. Automatic transmission is an extra $1,600.

Toyota: we don't want to partner with a third party to offer modified vehicles with non-OEM parts through our dealer network.

Also Toyota: let's hastily install some off the shelf shocks and coils at port on a model trim that doesn't even offer KDSS and a roof rack that looks like ass and call it a premium "off road" edition.

Also Toyota Australia : Hell yeah. You want an OEM flat bed? - done. OEM bull bar with winch? Sure - we can do that. Oh, you want front and rear solid axles with locking diffs, a v8 turbo diesel, and a utilitarian interior? No problem. For a country less populated than half of California? - don't even worry about it, we'll still do it.

North America? I think we've got a bunch of leftover parts from the FJ Cruiser we can sell them. Didn't you say there were some old roof racks in the storage shed?

Saw a Bronco Sport yesterday. It looks like a plastic toy.
Hope the real Bronco doesn't look so shit.
