What is "no". It's not a competitor to the 4Runner?

I meant that while it's built off the global platform there's probably so many changes to the suspension, electronics, interior, infotainment, and powertrain that it's basically a new US market vehicle. In fact no plans or announcements for it to even be released globally. So I'm not sure how much it has it common with the global platforms other than the frame.

As far as it being a 4R competitor I'd say it is. If I was in the market I'd cross shop the two and will likely do so when the 6th gen comes out.

So many options. How quickly do you think Ford can build all those custom Broncos?

Another observation:
Each picture that gets your interest has a disclaimer: “Preproduction Computer Generated Image Shown. Vehicle available mid-2021”.

I think Ford has hit it as far out of the park as they could with the new Bronco. The two-door is really close to the dream vehicle Ford fans have been asking for since the early 90s Explorer Sport days. It's literally a concept car put into production and Ford has clearly listened to off-road enthusiasts when it comes down to the details and features. I think they'll have a big hit on their hands.

Ford appears to have a laser-like focus on Jeep and I expect the Bronco line to put a significant dent into sales of the Wrangler and Compass 4x4. Just as these Jeep models are not directly similar to the 4Runner, I don't see the Bronco as a direct competitor to specific Toyota models, although I do expect some impact on Toyota's overall sales.

That said, I welcome the competition. The buzz and favorable first looks by the media appear to show that consumers want vehicles with more offroad capability, more maneuverability, more and easier customisability and more aggressive styling - things I, and I think, many of you on this forum favor. Looking at the new RAV4 Adventure and TRD Offroad trims, it does seem like Toyota has some awareness of these trends. Hopefully that will bode well for the 6th Gen 4Runner.

My main concern with buying a Bronco lies with the long-term durability of the 10-speed auto. My guess is that it's some variant of the 10R80, a tranny that was co-designed by Ford and GM and has been the source of a couple of recalls, and a class-action lawsuit. One of the biggest complaints with it is covered by a TSB for a sticking torque converter clutch valve that requires replacing the main control valve body - a very expensive fix. Owners of this transmission have posted encountering problems with it even under 10,000 miles. So I can only hope Ford will have the major bugs worked out of it before the Bronco is released.

All this said, I hope the Bronco does well and encourages other auto manufacturers, including Toyota, to continue to push the envelope to improve this class of vehicles.

At this point we're going to have to adapt to the added complexity of aging technology if you plan on keeping these new vehicles for long. Even the "simple" 5th gen is way more complex than the most loaded 3rd gen. Gone are the days of simple N/A power and a 4-speed. I think there's going to be a way to have a coyote V8 in these whether Ford allows it or not.

It's a global platform that's comparable to the 4Runner/Prado/GX similarities. So I would expect certain suspension components to carry over, like spindles, arms, some links. As for infortainment, pretty sure it's all Sync based globally. The only powertrain that's used extensively outside of the US for the Ranger is the diesel....which sounds like more hassle than it's worth lately to bring in any new diesel to North America due to the VW fiasco. And if Ford is the bottom line/bean counter some people claim they are, that argument alone would support many commonalities. Not to mention, even if it doesn't have any siblings outside of the US, it has one right at home...the Ranger, which is the same Ranger you'd find abroad.

Raptor Bronco is an inevitability. I would not be surprised if the work done for the Raptor Ranger is transferred over to the Bronco.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't the new Bronco nothing more than a Land Rover defender with different plastic attached? The side profile and model wheelbases look identical.

If it has anything in common with any Land Rover product, it is just going to be a massive unreliable, non-functioning failure. Ford and Land Rover are not known for their electrical system reliability. More vehicle electrical fires are from Fords than all other makes combined.

Fold sold Rover to BMW in 1994 so I'm pretty sure they haven't been sharing parts or plans in recent decades.

Ford did a great job with this. I wish Toyota would wake up and do something besides the never ending stream of Station Wagons(Oh yea, they call them "Crossovers" now) This should have been the new FJ. I love Toyota, but they have always been a bottom line driven company. Their margins on 4Runners are the highest of any model they sell. If they want to sell old shit, bring back the original Toy truck with the 22R engine....

I’m curious about where you found the information about Toyota’s margins on the 4Runner.

Toyota is a for-profit company, not a charity organization. They have investors and shareholders that expect a return on their investment. You think Ford, Chevy, or any other car-maker is going to ignore the "bottom line" in favor of catering to a small niche in the market?

Totally different. Probably zero shared parts at all. LR models are all unibody crossovers with IFS/IRS now. I don't know if LR still uses Ford drivetrains though. Last I knew they were switching to their own stuff. The earlier Evoques and such used Ford's 4cyl turbo engine. But I think they have switched.

The bronco should easily run circles around anything LR sells in the dirt. The newest LR Defender is closer to a Bronco Sport in design than it is to the Bronco. Sheet metal looks kinda similar though.

Yep. EVERY company that is successful is bottom-line driven. Heck, I'm bottom-line driven. I expect to be paid well for the hours and labor I provide in exchange. If that isn't the case, I'll trot off to somewhere better. It's basic human nature, but it's often politicized in a bad light so that the big corporations appear evil.

So...Ford Bronco 1st Edition costs around $60k.

LR Defender very well loaded with goodies costs around $70k.

So, for fun, which would you get since price is similar?
