For me - Bronco and it's not even close. Ford isn't the pinnacle of quality - but LR is horrendous. And the Ford is far more capable in terms of an offroader.

In the real world - and this is kinda what I'm looking at in a year. Trade the 4Runner for GX460 as a daily - mostly stock or small lift and a winch just for family exploring. Then buy a base Bronco with the offroad package for playing in the dirt.

The bronco should easily run circles around anything LR sells in the dirt. The newest LR Defender is closer to a Bronco Sport in design than it is to the Bronco. Sheet metal looks kinda similar though.
Except the Bronco Sport can be had for $30-$35k and the LRD for about $80k

I actually dig the Bronco Sport. Can be had with a rear locker and it has some pretty smart interior design cues. I'd get one over a Subaru or Rav4.

Bronco, no question about it!!! The Defender is still relying on technology and traction control to get it over obstacles. With a solid rear, 35" tires, high clearance, good angles, the Bronco will just roll over things without need of traction aids. Plus the LRD comes with 19" wheels which will be very hard to find good AT or MT tires for.

No surprise. The 4Runner has no DIRECT competitor. The last one was the Nissan Xterra. Now, that doesn't mean that people won't cross-shop nor does it mean that Toyota shouldn't make any changes to 4Runner. But most people don't buy the 4Runner because of what it can do off-road. If changes are to be made, it will be based on what most 4Runner owners want.

Its amazing how many options Ford has made available. The 4 door Outer Banks with lux package looks like a great 4Runner competitor.

Not interested in anything new. The 4runner is a bit too "electrical" for me. But I like it.

Some people will buy cars based on capability and some will buy it on looks. The Bronco has the looks but at this point we have no clue about capability or reliability.

Let's look at what most people complain about the 4R - lighting, engine, transmission...

Right, and that is why the Bronco will sell as well - regardless of real capability.

For 2021, Toyota is "fixing" the lighting issue and the engine, transmission and mpg can't be resolved until the next model.

Taco is right, most people buy cars because they look "cool" and not how capable they are.

People are "buying" the Bronco already before they've seen one in person, driven one or have actually read a review by a non-Ford reviewer.

Let's see how many versions and options actually are available once the order books open.

For the intended purpose, the 4R is, most likely, better than the Wrangler as it is more reliable and, along with the 4R international variants and the LC, is the off-road king. The Wrangler might be able to go places that the 4R cant, but the two cars need to get there too on "regular" roads - and the 4R does that much better.

So what new news do you have to report about the 5th gen 4Runner? I guess this is what happens when the platform is 10 years old with little to no innovation and the next update is 3 years away.

The "squat look" is beyond me. I don't get it from any standpoint, let alone esthetics...

I think Ford knocked it outta the park looks-wise. I love it. Outside of that -- only time will tell.

Timing for them is awful though -- a year earlier would have been better. I'm sure they'll sell a bunch on pre-order but with the economy still in that dicy state it's gonna effect their overall sales,...IMO.

This discussion is regarding the new Bronco. Someone posted a couple pics of a nice-looking older Bronco. As I've learned, people on this forum like all kinds of vehicles. It's cool.

I agree with others that the 4Runner isn't really a direct competitor to the Bronco. However, if you're wanting to see a comparison:

When it takes over a decade to come out with a new model, this is an antique forum. I am done waiting and will be getting the Bronco. The Bronco is what the FJ should have been and you know the new T4R will be most likely be the usual boring design with the mantra, "Who cares, it is reliable." Almost every car is reliable these days.

There is no doubt that Ford has been very innovative and thoughtful here with the Bronco. I'm not interested because it is no improvement on what I wheel and explore with. If I did not, it would be a cool option. I'm waiting for real reviews from some true offroading and not just splashing around mud holes.

Another point is the aging 4Runner...very valid point too. That is one reason I have hung on to my 2005. I will wait for a real redesign and more torque.
