History of Toyota by Scotty Kilmer

Scotty Kilmer recently started doing some documentary-style videos. He just released one covering the history of Toyota. Since the announcement of the Ford Bronco, there's been a lot of discussion on the forum about Toyota's seeming lack of ability/desire to do new things as quickly as American car companies and I think Scotty's video does a decent job of explaining Toyota's mindset.

Well worth the time to watch. Most of what they do is about efficiency and quality and they do it well. Because that's where the money is at.

They mention, near the end, that Toyota is going to deliver performance and economy. It will be interesting to see the outcome. The history of most Japanese car companies, they get something with performance then dump it later after it makes the news. Case and point - Lexus LFA. They produced it for a two years and was never to be seen again.

I think Ford has invested heavily in their trucks and have always (excluding the '70s) had a performance line. Ford has had SVT since 1993. Similarly GM has "Performance Parts" division and Mopar has SRT.

Unlike TRD which sells mostly bling and minor performance upgrades you can buy an engine, trans, even white box chassis for racing from American companies.

When it comes to long term commitment to performance, tuning and home mechanics the Japanese lack the history and have relied on third parties.

Don't forget, the best Chrysler is a 94 Celica.

I can't stand his videos anymore. He was fine when he was mostly helping people troubleshoot problems or repair things. Now most of his videos is his reading headlines or looking at his clients used cars and throwing in his largely anecdotal opinions. He contradicts himself from week to week. Some of the stuff he touts as a great feature or why something is bad makes me question whether he knows his ace from a hole in the ground.

From someone who doesn't know Scotty Kilmer from a hole in the ground, I thought this particular video was interesting and full of actual history. Toyota HAS traveled a very interesting and challenging path to get to where they are today. I didn't notice anything out of place in what he was saying.

Scotty makes really good coin off his YT videos but he is so cheap that he doesn’t want to buy a car lift and still uses jack stands and a hydraulic jack to crawl under vehicles. He has enough money to open his own auto repair shop with multiple car lifts.

I thought this documentary was good. I refuse to watch his other videos. I find his voice super annoying when he tries to exaggerate certain things or comments on certain things. Feels like he blows things out of proportion.
