4th Gen vs 5th Gen
Here's a hypothetical question that I realize calls for some subjectivity, but:
I have a 2013 SR5 that I'm really happy with. Good tires and a Bilstein adjusted ride, but I've otherwise slowed my build. It has about 88k miles and no issues.
There is a 2008 V8 limited in my family with about 28k miles (not a typo) that will be available to me at some point soon if I wanted it. I would let the 2013 go in this case. There is no scenario where I keep both.
It's a city vehicle that I will take into the mountains. I'm not looking for a wheeler, but we get off pavement and at altitude for camping and exploring and it's been on the beach and in the snow in the last 6 months.
Assuming some degree of build (racks, sliders, skid plates, lighting) Which would you prefer to build on?
I think that I like the size of the 4th gen a little bit better, but I dislike the amount of body plastic compared to the 5th gen. However, that V8 is really nice. I'm not quite sure how to feel about the full-time AWD vs the 2W High, 4W High, 4W Low configuration as a preference. I've driven both on and off road in fairly tough conditions.
This isn't going to happen immediately, but I'd like to sort out how I feel about it. Which would you rather build from?

I drive a 4th gen v-6 with the same bilstein lift, with almost 188k miles on it and it drives perfectly (after doing a little bit of work on the engine, no other mods) and my mom drives a 5th gen - 2020 TRD pro, which ive also driven. As well as owning a 3rd gen in the past. And I would have to say that if I had the choice I would drive the 5th gen. Its definitely a tough choice tho, i love my 4th gen, it drives like a dream and is a great truck all around. However, there are a few things I dont like, one of which is the central diff lock vs. the rear diff lock. And I would prefer the locking rear diff. And like you said the V8 doesnt even have 4WD only AWD, id rather have a locking central diff to AWD.
The other noticeable difference ive come across is the lack of upgrades for the 4th gen. It seems toyota made this gen a bit more user friendly for the masses, and the 3rd party offroad companies took notice and theres not as much out there for upgrade options.
Also, that V8 is a gas guzzler, not to say any 4runner gets great gas mileage, but the v8 sits at the bottom of the list. My 2008 v6 is getting 19.8mpg of mostly city driving (new spark plugs, and 87 octane is all I can attribute that to)
But the price tag of the v8 vs your 5th gen is probably something to consider as well. Just my 2 cents

I liked my 04 V8 Limited much more than my 2020 ORP. Unfortunately, rust got her.

If the frame is good I would have a hard time not making that trade. The V8 motor is awesome and the difference in gas mileage is far from drastic. The V8 models are full time 4ws not awd.
I would think the V8 would be better to build on given how much better it will handle the extra weight.

IMO, if you plan on off-roading and/or adding more armor, then 5th gen is a great choice.
If you plan on just staying mostly on-road, then it is hard to beat V8 and full-time 4wd system. I believe that the 4th gen’s full-time 4wd system is by far Toyota’s best 4wd system in terms of capability and available 2wd mode...only other Toyota vehicle currently that can match this flexibility is the Sequoia.

Thai, what makes you say that? (not meaning to sound aggressive, just genuinely want to know). Does the 5th gen have better approach/departure angles or is it that the aftermarket is better? I've found myself wondering the same, over which would be a better general off-roader.

4th gen frame did have an issue...esp when you start to add armor (aka weight). One of the crossmember or weld is prone to crack. In addition, the FJ Cruiser (a cousin of the 4th gen) had fender issue to frame flex.

5th gens have stronger rear axle gears, available with rear lockers from the factory, and some other gadgets like crawl control or KDSS which can help it offroad.
But you can add the lockers or stronger rear gears to the 4th gen too.

08-09 V8s are next to impossible to find with that low of miles. I would assume it is in great shape still. Modded or not, I think that 4th gen will hold its value over any early 5th gen if you take care of it. Sell the 5th gen and have a little extra cash in your pocket to spend on the new mods!

I'd go with the 4th gen with the V8. Manufactuers are getting away from large displacement vehicles and giving us underpowered options. We drove a 2020 Nightshade the other day and it felt downright anemic to my 4th gen v6.

Which makes absolutely no sense because the fifth generation V6 makes almost as much power as the fourth generation V8 and the trucks are virtually identical in just about every single way except appearance.
Unless the all wheel drive system in the Limited is really that much of a power sucking pig as some have said, although that hasn’t been my experience with it.

We drove my 4th gen with 220k on the clock to the dealership, drove both a nightshade and off road premium, then drove back and both agreed mine felt like it had more power. Of the 2 we drove at the dealer I'd say the off road premium seemed to have more pep, as well as felt more nimble.

I've had all 3. A 3rd gen (RIP) and still have a 4th (2008 SR5) and 5th (2012 LE). My favorite to drive is my 2008 SR5. In my opinion, It feels quicker on acceleration and more responsive when driving. Its feels a lot lighter then the 5th. I primarily use it for driving around the DMV where it makes a difference in tight traffic.
If driving out of town, I only take the 5th. Its slower, less responsive to increased throttle request, but it feels heavier, more solid and a lot safer than the 4th.
Spend some more time driving the 4th and the 5th before you make your decision. Either way, its still a win win.

I had to trade in my 2004 V8 for a 2020 6. The V8 makes a lot of power down low in the RPM range. The 6 has to downshift anytime it thinks about going anywhere. I hate it.
