Areas of Cali are already over $6. I imagine NY as well and the states haven't budged on reducing or removing temporarily gas tax to help offset inflation. I believe Florida is in the process of doing that now.
I have not read this thread, but for many of us, we have already been down this road about 15 years ago. It was the demise of large SUV's (Ford Ford Expedition and the entire Hummer line) and the larger scale introduction of hybrids.
Remember how the RV market was bonkers during Covid? That is about to come crashing down HUGE. Looking for an overland trailer, RV or camping or overlanding gear or equipment? Its coming cheap. Really cheap as the economy is about to crater. I cancelled my trailer order about 4 months ago. It had a 12 month lead time. The $18k I was going to spend on it will now net me the same or nice rig for probably 1/3-1/2 the price used.
15 years ago all of the not so bright Harley and custom bike guys who were selling slab steel POS's for $50-80k all day, couldn't offload their Road Glides and Jesse James customs for $15k. It was a disaster but incredibly predictable based on short sided buyers with spare free money due to low interest rates. Thats all about to change.
So yes, if you bought your 4Runner and are on a budget, consider getting out of it NOW, not in 4-6 months. Prices are going to be tumbling as no one will ahve cheap money available and qualifying for anything will be really difficult, let alone the job market will come unhinged. #thanksjoe

Yes, in SoCal it's well over $6 in many places.
I've been riding my Dual Sport @ 50 mpg when it's not too hot or cold.

Yes. It's only an issue for the anxious and unprepared. Humans blame everyone but themselves. Greed and the acceptance of it, look in the mirror, is the problem. Ignorance in this country doesn't help either. The oil industry loves it when they can sit back and be the victim. The fracking failures and payouts to investors are now coming to fruition on our backs.

I personally, like everything that has come from the industrial revolution forward. I mean pretty much OIL provides us a very elevated level of living. Plastic, asphalt, heating, rubber, computers. Heck, you name it and petroleum probably is used to produce it. I like the 18wheelers who bring food too.
Not sure about anyone else but I'm not too keen to live as if it were the 1800s again. I know exactly what being cold, wet, hungry, and miserable is already.
$8.00? I'll pay more than that if needed.

Some of this is greed and/or bad decisions coming back to bite some gas stations. I saw two gas stations practically right next to each other today. One was $4.71. The other was something like $5.30. I saw cheaper than $4.71 elsewhere. Yeah, $4.71 ain't cheap, but you've got to wonder what happened to get that one gas station to $5.30.

In the back of my mind I'm always slightly thinking of getting rid of it. Not necessarily because of fuel prices, but because it's worth more than I think any 9 year old Toyota has any right to be. I'm used to buying vehicles that are pretty much worthless by the time I pay them off, haha.
I like it because other than mpg (I commute 300 miles/week) it suits my needs and has proven to be stupid reliable.
8 bucks a gallon would be rough though, currently paying 4.70 and it sucks, but isn't breaking me. It IS making me consider my trips carefully. I remember going through this in 08/09 and paying about the same for my vehicle that required premium, that was more painful because I was making much less at the time.
8 bucks would probably have me reconsidering my employment and living situations more than vehicle choice.
In the interim, I'm considering purchasing a Honda Fit or similar as a DD. As it is now, we take my GF's 40mpg Hyundai on any trips where the 4R is not specifically needed.

IF that happens, then yeah, i will buy a cheaper transportation vehicle and my LC becomes a weekend car only. In fact, right now, i drive 100 miles everyday...and mostly i use my minivan for that.

Actually i don’t mind the sky-rocketing inflation, stock market bombing resulting in lost retirement, US involvement in wars abroad, throwing trillions away, and shortages of milk…….it is a good reminder that your votes matter. We as a nation chose to go down this route. Sometimes, it requires blatant idiocy to wake a nation up.
Bring on the good times!

Corporate GREED seems like the go-to answer usually from those who either don't understand the simple economic reality of supply/demand and/or who want to excuse the incompetence of bad government policies.
Gas stations mark up their fuel a few cents above what their supplier charged them for the last tanker of fuel. If one station filled up last week, and another yesterday, the prices may be quite different. Gas stations, like movie theaters, make most of their $ from drinks and candy.
Closing off public lands to oil/gas exploration, taxing the hell out of existing permitees and slow walking new permit applications has had a huge effect on supply. With demand constant, prices rise, and companies make more $ per $ invested. We the People are left holding the New Green Deal bag.

A few gas stations always do this. As long as it isn't excessive and too many doing it, they can skate. Now, oil and gas companies are raking it in...watch their revenue and profit #s. Compare those to the last 8-10 quarters...

Now that people are driving more they are actually driving a lot more for summer vacations etc and that helps drive up the prices of gas.

Ok, maybe change direction of thread a little bit.
Gas/oil issues being stipulated to on both sides........
What would you get as a back-up vehicle that gets better gas mileage? We have a 2010 Camry that sips, but if I could find what I wanted it would be a VW Van from the early 70s or a bug.
Maybe a bike?
