I drove when gas hit $4.80/gal in my city.
$70, the pump limit, would only fill my suv at the time to 3/4 tank. And the worry of having your gas in your tank stolen was real with reports of it happening daily.
I would still be driving around at $8 a gallon. Untill I get so frustrated fixing holes in the tank and the cut gas lines used to siphon my hard earned money.

Thanks for that link. Yep, high gas prices are another part of the high cost of living in the west. Especially in larger cities and along the interstate highways. Someone’s gotta pay for that clean(er) air.

Might have to look into an EV conversion if gas hits $8/gallon!

Yes but I won't open it up on the highways as much to hear my CAI grumble!

Yes I will keep the 4Runner as I didn't purchase to be a daily commuter. That would've been foolish. It's a donkey but great for hauling dogs, camping gear and bikes. Bike commuting or public transportation to the office is the play and has been lovely.

I live 5 miles from my job and it's paid off. I learned a lesson back when gas went to 4.25 in the mids 2000s. I had a 2005 GMC Sierra Z71. I loved that thing. It was paid off but thought by going to a camery I would save money. The 400 monthly car payment trumped any savings over the 70 I paid every 9 days in gas.

I will not make that mistake again.

Since I don't make payments on it I cant see myself selling it. I've been thinking about buying another vehicle. Probably something efficient that's cheap to maintain and fuel.

We could only hope....

I wish it would go to 8 a gallon. Maybe then there might be some incentive for Toyota to update it. Right now they are selling more 4Runners then ever before and it is the highest profit margin car or truck they sell, so why would they ever update it?

What could be updated? Hybrid Synergy Drive, as a whole, wouldn’t be bad.

I like that system, as a whole, but not sure how a CVT would do in a 4Runner.

I'd just start walking more and driving less.

With my 4R, 18000 miles a year at 18 mpg so 1000 gallons per year. At $3/gal it costs $3000. At $8/gal it would cost $8000. About $100 more a week so I can’t see giving up driving for that. When I had a Suburban and drove a lot more at $3.50gal, my gas bill was about $700/month. It’s part of the cost of living so you pay what you have to. Now I have a Land Cruiser and running premium so my math already looks different but I still enjoy driving.

Will you keep your 4runner if gas hits $8 a gallon?

The psychological part being the games that are played with artificial scarcity. How long did gas prices stay elevated after Katrina? That’s when they first hit $3.00 for us and 2009 they were up even farther, not down, at $4.20 a gallon in the southeast.

Your 2uz doesn't require premium and you're just making it run worse (unless they changed something between 01 and 04). Run the lowest octane without pinging and if it doesn't recommend premium, it's a waste.

Our 2011 does require premium.... and to add to the thread.... we are considering trading/selling it in part due to it's mileage.

We've done the hybrid thing. Meh (owned both a Prius C and a Prius V).

I would get another T4R. Our 97 gets around 20 and happy about that.
