Tires and Steering Wheel Vibration

Hey everyone,

I have had my LT285/70R-17 COOPER DISCOVERER S/T MAXX E for over 3 years now with almost 45k miles on them. I am experiencing steering wheel vibration at certain speeds, especially during deceleration. Is it time for new tires? I know there is a penny test to see if I have enough tread, but is 45k miles on a single set of tires nearing the end anyways?

Thanks all!

Have the balance checked for starters. Is there uneven wear?
I'm also extremely sensitive to road vibrations from tires. I drive 25-30K miles, about 80% on pavement.
Sometimes it is as simple as uneven air pressure.

Also, deceleration means braking. Steering vibration during braking is front rotor warp, perhaps. Brake pedal vibration/shudder is rear rotor warp, possibly.

Again, these are just my thoughts without any physical observation of your tires.

What gen? Best bet tire balance or worn unevenly. put the rear tires on the front and see if it still does it. Old Bushings in lca's, sway bar, links etc.

I had some Cooper AT3s for about 4 years, and i neglected to rotate them well, and they also developed a nice giggle near the end of their life. I had them rebalanced, which helped get rid of the wiggle for about 6 months, but then it came back.

Whether its the Coopers being sensitive to the rotation schedule, or just the fact that T4R wheels are sensitive to being hub-balanced properly...i am not smart enough to answer, but i think one or both of those are the answer.

I have since swapped tires, and my rig runs as smooth as a Billy Eckstine tune

I've had several different brands of tires on several different vehicles develop a vibration at speed as the miles racked up.

Rebalancing and regular rotation resolved the issue.
