Premium fuel ya or na

I have a 2001 toyota 4runner. With 275000 plus miles. Is there any real benefit to using premium fuel. My engine seems to be in great shape no odd colored exhaust.

No.
The engine was designed for “regular”

I had a 2001 as well. Agreed, regular gas is fine - the truck was built for it. BUT, on one long vacation trip (about 6000 miles), I saw that there were places out west selling gasoline without ethanol added. I decided to experiment, since I was watching mpgs out of curiosity due to pulling a trailer. I filled with straight gasoline when I could, and mileage seemed to increase by around 2 mpg. It wasn't premium, just no ethanol. A bit more expensive, too, so there was no economic gain.

Higher octane (effectively) burns slower, so you loose efficiency. think of it like this. since it burns slower, some of the available heat isn't totally taken advantage of or used, and escapes out the exhaust ports prior to burning. You need the extra compression and timing to take advantage of the premium fuel. So its money wasted out the tail pipe. Not totally scientifically correct, but close enough to get the point across. At higher density altitudes it gets worse.

You’d be wasting money putting premium in that old rig.

I see positive results from burning premium. Runs better and the mileage is improved. To each their own.

Depending on where you were in the West, altitude could also attribute to better gas mileage. I lived at about 4600' in AZ and got about 2 MPG better on average than I do now that I am in lower elevations--same vehicle.

That's interesting. I wouldn't expect that, considering that the normal octane out there is (was) 85.5. But honestly, I didn't pay attention to any mpg/altitude connection. Maybe I was seeing what you're describing instead.

Nay for premium

Have never noticed a difference with premium fuel ethanol or non in 4Runner.
My Audi V8 yes makes a difference premium real gas all it ever gets.

I traveled from CO to TX in my FJ, and lost 4-5mpg. MAn, I was glad to get back to 7000'!

unclear if premium will help - as you can see from previous comments.

But one of the things that is generally recommended is using "Top Tier" gasoline brands. They detergents and other additives that some research has shown to help keep the engine clean and running well. - based on AAA, consumer reports, etc

MyFJ had the 4.0 and I went back and forth with premium and regular and never noticed a difference either way. My fourth gen has a V8 and I run regular. Just run regular unless your OCD won't let you put regular in there. Lol
