Hiding keyless entry fob

Any suggestions on hiding a spare key or main key on keyless entry vehicle.

Lets say you are going on a hike or fishing and you don't want to take your key with you (for a number of reasons). Other than hiding it under a rock does any have any ideas. Placing the fob under the vehicle produces a various results...sometimes it opens, sometimes not.

Remove the batteries from the fob.

plausible, but then I assume I would take the button cell battery with me?

too easy to lose. My scenario is that I would be parking vehicle by side of river and possibly be wading in river while fishing. I would not like leaving my keys/bag on the bank where I could lose them or someone might pick them up.

I suppose could use the physical key and just leave batteries out as u suggest

When I go kayaking, I take my 4R keys and lock them in my Gobi rack toolbox.

The box key then goes on a lanyard permanently attached directly to my PFD.

This way, I always have vehicle access and never have to worry about destroying the fob in salt water.

does the proximity of the keys in the rack allow the doors to be opened?

its a good question -
I have some stuff I have learned about the key FOB (limited model) over the last 6 years.

The FOB is remarkable.......... I don't know how to make sense out of the distance parameters. I can lock / unlock and remote start it from ~ 100 yards?
The proximity function is about a 5ft range - where the puddle / interior lights and auto unlock function activate.

I have a small pelican case that I carry all my stuff in keys /phone, mini ipod (remember those) small automatic knife, wallet some spare cash and change. I think of this as my "go box" - basically has everything I need. I take it on the boat, toss it in a small backpack for mountain biking, hiking, beach etc.

It sounds like that's not something that works for you...... got it, but I wanted to start there as it has proven to be fool proof...the down side is that everybody wants to throw their keys / etc in my box.......ha

WARNING: I am not recommending this behavior-----however. This key FOB cracks me up........have you ever popped it open? It has a rubber membrane that basically seals it. So what. The 4runner is actually my wife's. She is a rock star and the best person on the planet, but she has torture tested the FOB in the following accidental ways:
1. Run it through the full cycle in the washing machine
2. Taken it swimming - full submerged
3. Dropped it in the pool, and it was lost for 2 days
I am not sure its designed to be indestructible and water proof, but somehow it has survived for 6 years in her world.
I am sharing this because I could not believe that it still worked after these types of situations. After each of the above incidents I did pop it open and inspect for the presence of water before trying to use it again... just in case, but it has worked every time.

I lose stuff that is not mine, part of the reason for the "go box" / pelican case.... having everything in one place helps....total OCD behavior, but when we bought the 4runner I paid for a 3rd key....because you never lose you key in a place where you can walk home. I pulled the battery out and the FOB sits in the bottom of the center console in a zip lock, and the mini key is hidden in a place that everybody in the family can easily get at.. if you lost the FOB, the key can be used to unlock the door and the battery can be inserted into the FOB and the crisis and drama is avoided....... that plan has not happened and it was ridiculous that the dealer charged me $300 for the extra key, but --- well whatever.

A buddy of mine has little sheath that snaps a lid over the FOB and once it's closed there's no way it'll start the vehicle. It's not considerably much larger than the FOB itself and he has left it on the vehicle in strategic locations without worry

You could put the key in one of those Faraday bags made for cell phones.

Wrap the fob in tin foil and it's like putting it in a faraday cage. Blocks the RF signal. Then take the key with you. Hide the foil anywhere in the vehicle you desire.

I seriously thought this was a load of crap, so I just tested it with my wife's '19 Taco. Sure enough, when I tried to start it the truck beeped at me and the display read "Key not detected."

Very cool and something to keep in mind for future reference!

Sorry I guess I misunderstood. I though you were trying to hide the fob with the vehicle similar to the old magnetic key boxes. In that case I would hide the key and batteries together probably in a small ziploc bag underneath in the frame somewhere or in a locked box on the roof.

Works like a charm. I read this somewhere dealing with vehicle thefts. The article was about people driving around and "scanning" for key fobs at particular people's houses. Then they get a fob programmed to that frequency and all of a sudden the target vehicle is driven away.

Ever since then, all RF key fobs have either had the battery removed or lived in a tin foil envelope until the fob was needed. May pick up a faraday cage bag for certain rides when out and about too. Don't want somebody walking up to me with a scanner...
