Android Auto head unit vs mounted phone?

I'm juggling options for a head unit upgrade to my 2005 4runner.

I've always just used my phone in all my previous cars (mounted to the vent, or other methods). Wondering if it's time for a more modern solution - a head unit with Android Auto like the Boss BE7ACP-C.

So far from what I've seen, it's not a compelling upgrade. The workflow improvements from having a fancy unit doesn't seem much better from just a mounted phone workflow. In fact, there are annoying nanny-ish limitations (like watching video while parked - I'd need to unplug and use the phone).

With my phone, I can also mount it closer to me.

The only reason I might want such a head unit is for the backup camera hookup. Otherwise, I think I'll be just fine with a single-DIN head unit that has bluetooth.

Curious about what others think. Let me know your experience if you've switched to Android Auto (or Carplay). I'd welcome sales pitches for getting such a head unit! Maybe I'm missing something!

You don’t have to unplug your phone to use all the options. I can watch movies on my phone (while parked obviously) and play the sound through my speakers, creates a really nice surround sound system.
I also find it’s easier to see and read directions on the bigger screen, especially at night. Plus Gaia on a double din is a nice feature, no more iPad in my car.

I'd stick with phone

In my opinion, no 3rd party head unit will be as seamless in function as a factory head unit would be. So there will always be little annoying things that should work but don't.

I'd personally stick with a mounted phone until you get a vehicle that has the function built in.
