Should I replace my 10 years old tires?

My 2010 4runner has original tires which is 11 years old. We are in Canada, so we swap to Winter tires for half the time. So, the original tire tread is not bad, still have a full 4/32 on all of them. But I heard tires should be replaced after 6-10 years as the rubber will rot and become unsafe. Should I replace them now? Looks like this is a $1k investment and no way to DIY

Short answer: Yes. Long Answer: Still yes. They're significantly down on tread depth, but more importantly, they're almost certainly weather cracked.

Doubtful those tires are safe after that amount of time spent in storage - I'd replace them.

Replace. Tread is low and I'm sure they are starting to rot and crack, even if it's hard to see it.

Several things to consider with your question. The biggest factor is how do you use your vehicle?

To safely cover every scenario, yes is the only answer. If your spouse and especially children are in it- sell your blood and put good tires under them!

Older tires have 2 big problems:
1. The rubber gets hard and significantly reduces traction, ESPECIALLY in the wet, which can be particularly dangerous if you aren't knowing of this risk and driving accordingly. (This can be fun if you like to have fun with the skinny pedal and know how to do it safely.)
2. Reduced tread depth can cause very hazardous hydroplaning on standing water, even seemingly smaller puddles.

Is there new vehicle take-offs available? I buy new tires after 6yrs regardless of tread depth.

I agree that replacing makes sense. Check for cracks in the sidewalls. I had trailer tires that blew out as a consequence of age.

My wife's 2018 Acura TLX SHAWD has a slow leak and I took it to Pepboys. The rubber was cracked inside and outside we saw when they removed the tire from the rim. The tires are OE and were made 5/17 with about 35k miles. There is plenty of tread left on them. If you got 10 years out of your you tires you have done very well.

Smile

I had some tires on my 3rd gen that were nearly 14 years old. The rubber will be very hard and the tires will not perform well in snowy/wet conditions. Hopefully, you can find a set under $1000

If you see cracks, it’s time to replace whether it means a prorated warranty claim or just outright replacement. Even if safety of yourself is of no concern, if you cause an accident, you could be in big trouble if worn out tires can be blamed.
