I can handle the boring and bland interior but with the steep mountain passes we have, the lowish torque delivery is pretty underwhelming. Offroading is about the same as any decent IFS. Here's to hoping it gets a turbo or two. The Lexus version of the LC is the only Toyota worth it for me, though the 4R is at least somewhat inexpensive.

Looks like a serious off-road 4x4.

I say, to each their own. I don’t mind how “boring” the 4R is, and in all honesty I say it keeps some responsible drivers. I owned a 2011 Nissan Juke w/ a manual trans before this ‘02 4R, which is a very fun car to drive by the way, tho I formed some very bad driving habits. It was so light and speedy, I kinda miss it, but with the 4R its about on the opposite spectrum, which I could totally see that being a negative for most, but I say its also more predictable, more safe, and easier to maintain, not to mention the reliability as everyone else has. It might be boring, but thats a nice break from the overhyped world of gadgets and tricks that will be more difficult and expensive to fix in the long run. Certainly less to go wrong. For those who like to work on their own cars, mod to their liking, find simplicity relaxing and refreshing, the 4R is ideal. But, if thats not your thing then by all means, find your thing and enjoy it. This world is always moving, there may be something even more perfect for you 2 years down the line, or not, who knows. Not trying to convince you of the 4R, but there is something there to be appreciated, whether its your taste or not. My rant is done. I hope you find ‘your’ car.

I could total my repair bills on my 2012 L322 S/C and it would be paid off.

And that’s no repeat work, either. Brought it in for a concern, shop fixed, concern went away. New concern for a different issue each time.

The entire SUV is a big fabergé egg, expensive and fragile. Despite having had religious dealer maintenance performed prior to my ownership, never missed a service.

Yes mate they are total rubbish, but the badge sells. They are a very nice place to sit while you wait for a tow, though. I'll give them that. Gorgeous interiors. When they work they are capable vehicles but...

I just had to read the OP.
So not enough power, could be solved easy enough throwing some more money at it for power adders, ultimately a turbo/super charger, or maybe a stroker. Have you looked at chips or reprogramming if you can do it, or if its easy to do.

But you can't fix the interior room aspect.

Ideally, I'd go for a FJ for a wheeler rig, for a family rig and offroading rig its hard to say, Sequoia if you want to stay Toyota. Or what about some of the luxury models in Lexus.

I would stay well away from Landcruisers/rovers.

I get bored with vehicles and have had a lot over my driving years so far at least 70 cars and trucks. I am 57 and just reserved a 22 ORP. Currently in a 2017 gmc sierra all terrain x. I have loved the truck beside the v8 to v4 afm system. Bought a odb plug in (the range) to keep it in v8 mode. Shudders when cold and hits high gear. GM acknowledged issue in 2015 with a service bullitin no recall as they don't have a fix. I have had GM,FORD,DODGE, RAM, NISSAN vehicles and no vehicle has ever been perfect. And if you want a one of a kind that no other person has you better build it yourself. Drove a used SR5 Runner as that was the only 4 runner at the dealer to try. They are popular for a reason old school reliable vehicle. Can't wait to get mine( first Toyota) I am like a kid waiting for Christmas. Good luck with your next vehicle.

What do you find wrong with Landcruisers?
