2yr Warranty Walmart Battery, Made in Mexico, Lasted...7 Years

I was looking at reviews for a new battery, seeing lots of hate towards Made in Mx, Walmart, 2 yr warrantied batteries, etc. I was disappointed to see the local auto shops only seeming to have 3yr warranty batteries for their premium line, except for one 5yr AGM at BatteriesPlus over $300. So I decided to skimp and get the Costco $99 battery as it is also 3yr and they generally have easy returns and are everywhere.

Got home and found the old battery was a 58r Walmart 2 yr Made in Mexico battery with a 12/14 manufacture date, so it lasted 7 years! It would have lasted longer but I left the lights on overnight draining the battery no less than ten times in the past three months. Fortunately I have trained myself now to double check before I exit the vehicle.

Certainly a mild Bay Area climate helps. But still, I am amazed. The new Costco battery had no lift strap but I swapped it over from the old one, and the 27F fits my Gen3 without a 1” block plastic to keep it in place.

My experience with wally world batteries is, as long as you use them regularly (not short trips) then they'll last. But as soon you run them dead (from sitting too much or whatever) they won't hold a charge anymore. That's been my experience anyway. Ive been using costco batteries for the last 4 years now, and have been holding up good. My F250 for example, I hardly ever drive it but it always holds a charge and starts right up. I wouldn't ever be able to do that with the walmart battery.

I had two different Costco batteries that also stopped holding charges after only one year due to lack of use. My third one has lasted two years so far because I make sure to drive my 4R almost every day, especially in the winter. Two different three week trips in February (2019 and 2020) killed the first two. I should have removed them before I went out of town. (Because of covid, I also didn’t go out of town for three weeks in 2021.)

I have always had great service out of Walmart Everstart batteries for the last 15 or more years in several vehicles....BUT in the last almost 3 years I have had 2 fail on me, all of their batteries up until the last 2 were made by Johnson Control whom is known for making great batteries, the first one to fail prematurely was a 5 year battery made by another company called "Clarios" (which is a subsidiary of "Brookfield Business Partners") it failed in about 13 months, I got it replaced under warranty with a battery having the same Walmart part number and also made by Clarios....but that part number now is a 3 year battery, now 12 months later it is failing, I'm going to get it replaced one more time and hopefully the next battery will come close to lasting out the warranty, if it does or doesn't I will not be buying batteries from Walmart any longer unless I see they go back to selling Johnson Control made batteries!

Just out of curiosity, were your costco batteries intestate? Looks like Ive had mine in since 10/18. I put about 3K miles a year on it. I'm actually surprised it started this afternoon. It hasn't ran in a month and its been really cold.

Yes, all 3 have been Interstate batteries. I think the second one was a bad battery. I had problems with it right after I bought it.

I don’t think I have a parasitic draw issue (I did do a mA check on the battery as described in this forum), but I’m not 100% sure of that. I do know that regular use has kept my third battery alive longer than the other two.

I used to get my batteries from an Interstate store, for other vehicles that I owned a long time ago, and they were always very good.
